Around the League 2018-2019 Edition

it's gotten to the point where I am embarrassed on their behalf.

poor McDavid. wonder how much longer he puts up with this shitshow.

McDavid looked concerned and aggravated for the 1st time. They've got to give him a better supporting cast than they have.

Here's the worst bit:

They really need to clear the decks and retool/rebuild for a few years, as amazing as that is to say about a team that has been in a perpetual state of rebuild for 10+ years now.

Upfront they have 2 legit foundational pieces & the Nuge. After that the organization basically has two prospects of any note (Pool Party and Yamamoto) but neither of them can be considered can't miss in the least, and Edmonton has a terrible habit of ruining talented players so while hoping for both to fill in important roster spots is fair, expecting them isn't imo. There's a few middle 6 lottery tickets in the system (Marody, Benson, Maksimov) and that's it. This is a forward group that has 3 guys who would make our best top 9.

On the blueline they're more or less a mess. Klefbom is an good #2-3 when he can stay healthy, Larsson seems to have fallen to shit but is a good 2nd pairing RHD when he's not a mess...and that's where it ends. Nurse is still a mess, and Benning is an okay bottom pairing RHD. That's pretty much it. They're missing half of a blueline if they intend on being any good and they're missing the good half. The good news here is that Evan Bouchard is coming, and maybe as early as next year (knowing this **** show, that's almost a certainty) and he certainly fills a need for an offensively talented defender who can run a PP. The bad news is that other than him there's Ethan Bear and Caleb Jones as potential NHL'ers with any sort of upside.

Goaltending is even worse without a prospect of note and now a 30 yr old KHL goaltender locked in for 3 years at actual money.

It's actually incredible how poorly this team has been managed. Every time I look at it, I'm amazed. It's a collection of elite talent, crap, & overpaid crap on terrible contracts. Then throw into the mix a pretty abysmal development system that though decently well stocked at the moment with names, seems to be doing it's usual stellar job in ruining what talent it has.

The best is, they're more or less capped out. They can do some nibbling around the edges in free agency, but until Russell, Lucic, lol...and now Koskinen are off the books, they're going to have a hard time adding real piece in free agency, should those pieces actually come along for a reasonable number and be willing to go to Edmonton.

To fix this will take a similar level of genius to what incompetence it took to dismantle it. They would have been really ****ing good already had Chia just done nothing. Incomplete and in need of some tweaks, but really good. Basically the western conference version of us sans Freddy and Rielly.

They don't do anything well. They don't draft well. They don't develop well. They don't scout well. They have 2 professional scouts. I don't even think they have an analytics person anymore.

They need to clean house before they can even begin to address the roster.

These psychos traded McDavid's best friend on the team for 1.5 years of Brandon Manning who

a) almost killed McDavid
b) is an absolute short bus fire of a defenceman.

the crazy thing is we still grade that organization on a curve.

we almost forget that McDavid wasn't the start of their rebuild, but was actually the last kick in the balls to the rest of the league after at least 5 if not near 10years of tanking and rebuilding and winning 1st overlall pick after first overall pick.

Its not just Chiarelli

Bob Nicholson is clearly a dogshit President and the owner Katz seems to be mild mannered Melnyk

And the fact that they are even considering letting Chia handle the deadline while he needs to save his job is insanity. Nothing he could possibly do will be good for the organization.

The contract itself is essentially a NMC but in Funke fashion he gave him a limited NMC

Meh you only want to move he if he craps out and if he does no one is taking that contract.

If the contract is so terrible from the concept of it, then a NMC is really nothing to worry about.

Oil Change.

And my favorite part in all this is that the majority of leafs fans and media are actively rooting for the leafs to follow the oilers blueprint, and trade off their skill for gritty toughness.

yup.

they basically need to fire the entire front office, scouting staff (both pro and amateur), etc. totally clean house.

and even then, there are what, a small collection of players actually worth keeping that could maybe make positive contributions to a winner?

and as zeke mentions, it's not like they haven't been in the 'rebuild' cycle for going on a decade, nor is it like they have been unlucky (far from it).

staggering incompetence.

Imagine letting the avg 590 caller free reign to trade for like, Wayne Simmonds.....

and then Nylander for a D.

Dont even know who the D is until he shows up to the rink the next day in a mystery box, but you can bet he hits people.

Another funny note about the Mikko Koskinen contract:

Not only does it give him "lockout protection money" in the form of a signing bonus in year #2, but Chiarelli also gave him a 15-team no-trade-clause.
