2018-19 Canes Prospect and Calder Cup Winning Charlotte Checkers Thread

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Hmmm ... Booth has been backing up since Darling left, right? Maybe he's not cutting it. Dunno ... it's weirdly difficult to see their stats.

Update ... nevermind. Booth has been pretty bad. Save percentage well below .900 with GAA of nearly 3.00

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

That is strange. Waddell was asked about Darling in his trade deadline presser and said he expected he would be back soon. I guess not very soon. Booth maybe dinged up? They don't want to disturb Helvig apparently, who is putting together a solid 1st pro season for the Everblades (18-6-0 2.39 .913). Tokarski isn't very good either, so I'm assuming this is due to some sort of injury with Booth (or Ned) and that Darling is nowhere near close to playing again (if he ever plays again). It also could just be a hedge for a Neds injury as we don't want to leave Charlotte's playoff success to Darling or Booth.

Frankly, I'll believe Darling is back in Charlotte when he's standing in the crease in his goalie kit for the anthem one night. Not that I'm calling Waddell a liar, but you don't need to be counting on that guy if one of the other keepers is dinged up or just badly out of whack.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

BCHL playoffs start today. Jack LaFkntsine was named goalie of the year in the league. Pentixton finished with the 3rd best record in the league with 79 points in 58 games. The Chilliwack Chiefs, captained by Skyler Brind’Amour, had the best record with 85 points. He was drafted by Edmonton in the 2017 6th round but is headed to Quinnipiac next season.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Dustin Tokarski picked up the win in his Checkers debut, marking the first time a goaltender other than Alex Nedeljkovic has won a game for the Checkers since Jan. 5 (Scott Darling).

That's a significant stretch without any wins from the backup.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

All good in Charlotte this past week:

Mar 1 Binghamton W 4-2 Ned with the win. Carrick, Saarela, Gauthier and Brown with the goals
Mar 2 Binghamton W 8-1. Tokarski with win. Bean, Jurco x2, Poturalski x2, Kuokkanen, Brown and Schilkey with the goals

Still a 6 point lead over Bridgeport who just keeps winning as well. Checkers still have a game in hand.

Brief 2 game roadie this week, Lehigh Valley on Friday and Sunday

Mattheos has had himself a season, hasn’t he? Fourth in goals, tied for 12th in assists, 6th in points.

Has Jurco been playing alongside Necas in Charlotte since his trade? That would seem like a very nice pair on an offensive line alongside Janne K to round it out.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Checkers this past week:

Mar 8 @Lehigh Valley L 3-2 Ned with the loss. Saarela had both of the goals.
Mar 10 @Lehigh Valley W 4-0 Ned with the 22 save shutout. Jurco, Roy and Schilkey x2 with the goals

Still a 6 point lead over Bridgeport. Checkers still have a game in hand.

2 games this coming week, Fri and Sat at home against North Division leading Rochester (who is now a mere 4 point behind the Checkers for best record in the AHL Eastern conference).

Canes draft picks and prospect stats through 3/10/2019
=======================================

Jack Drury C (2nd round 2018 ECAC Harvard Fr.) 28 Games 8 Goals 15 Assists +12

Eetu Luostarinen C (2nd round 2017 Liiga KalPa): 52 Games 14 Goals 19 Assists -1

Luke Martin RHD (2nd round 2017 Big 10 Michigan Jr.): 28 Games 0 Goals 6 Assists +1 *** Michigan lost to Minnesota in the Big 10 tournament this past week. With a 13-16-7 record, their season is over. Martin was hurt and missed the last month of the season. I don't expect him to leave school to turn pro, but I suppose its a possibility. Not exactly sure where he stands in terms of being a prospect still, but we did use a 2nd round pick on him, so hopefully there is something there. He's still 6'3" 215, so there is that I suppose.

Stelio Mattheos RW (3rd round 2017 WHL Brandon): 62 Games 43 Goals 51 Assists +19

Brendan De Jong LHD (6th round 2017 WHL Portland): 48 Games 7 Goals 19 Assists Even

Adam Fox RHD (trade ECAC Harvard Jr.): 29 Games 8 Goals 32 Assists +20

Matt Filipe LW (3rd round 2016 Hockey East Northeastern Jr.): 32 Games 7 Goals 9 Assists +4

Max Zimmer LW (4th round 2016 Big 10 Wisconsin Jr.): 34 Games 5 Goals 13 Assists +4 *** Wisconsin lost in the quarterfinals of the Big 10 tourney to Penn State. They will finish the season at 14-18-5. Those 5 goals and 13 assists were season highs for Zimmer. I think its safe to say that Zimmer returns to Wisconsin for his senior year and hopefully graduates with a solid degree.

Luke Stevens LW (5th round 2015 ECAC Yale Jr.): 22 Games 4 Goals 3 Assists -6

David Cotton C (6th round 2015 Hockey East Boston College Jr.): 34 Games 20 Goals 11 Assists -11

With Kiekko-Vanta: Record unknown 13 Games 2.92 GAA .905 Sv%
With KHL Jokerit: No Games played

Jack LaFontaine G (3rd round 2016 BCHL Penticton):

Regular Season: 30-13-1 2.19 GAA .923 Sv%
Playoffs 2-3 2.00 GAA .923 Sv% **** Penticton is down 3 games to 2 to Cowichan Valley. Cowichan Valley was 17-35-6 in the regular season so this would be a HUGE upset if LaFontaine and Penticton lose this series. Game 6 is tonight.

*********************

Couple things on these kids and their upcoming schedules:

The ECAC tournament later this week. Harvard (Jack Drury and Adam Fox) plays Dartmouth in a best of 3 starting Friday. Yale (Luke Stevens) plays Clarkson

The Hockey East tournament later this week. Northeastern (Matt Filipe) plays Maine in a best of 3 starting Friday. Boston College (David Cotton) plays Providence

The regular season for Liiga (Lenni Killinen, Eetu Luostarinen) ends this Thursday. Killinen's Assat team is dead last in Liiga, so his season is about to end. Luostartinen is on KalPa, who is 4th from last in Liiga. They are also going to miss the playoffs.

All of our CHL kids have their regular seasons end this coming week. Stelio Mattheos and Brandon look like they will miss the playoffs. Brendan De Jong and Portland is playoff bound. Luke Henman and Bainville-Boisbriand will not be in the playoffs.

Not sure about the SweHL schedule yet, but Jesper Sellgren and Lulea are the best team in the league, so he will be playing in the playoffs. I'm not sure what Jacob Kucharski's situation is with Omaha, but he is not playing games and Omaha is probably not going to make the playoffs. Ville Rasanen and USHL Chicago should make the playoffs. Eetu Makiniemi and his Mestis Kiekko-Vanta team? They are not good either (10th in a 12 team league). No idea what their playoff situation is.

I don’t follow ncaa hockey that closely. From what I can tell, Harvard is likely to make the ncaa tourney. Is that correct? So that would put off any discussion re Fox until basically the last week of the nhl season.

Harvard is not a lock for the NCAAs yet, but they should get in. They're ranked #14 in the country going into the ECAC tournament, and finished in fourth place in the ECAC (behind my first place Cornell Big Red!), which continues this weekend after first round action (for which the top four teams had byes) this past weekend.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Penticton lost 3-1 tonight so LaFontaine’s season is over too. He’s headed to the University of Minnesota next year.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Adam Fox was named Ivy League Player of the Year. The league is a subset of the ECAC, with 6 of the 8 schools. Columbia and Penn don’t have varsity teams. It’s based just on performances against the Ivies, not the other ECAC schools.

Fox is 4th in the country in points per game, first among dmen.

Cherkers beat Rochester 4-1 tonight. Vellucci said that Kuokkanen’s season is over, he’s having surgery. I can’t find what the injury is, but it’s relatively recent, his last game was March 2.

Yeah ... I haven't seen anything specific either. Although, usually when they delay surgery for a couple of weeks, it's joint-related.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Brandon didn’t make the WHL playoffs so Mattheos’ season is over. He’s not under contract yet but I expect it won’t be long before he’s in Charlotte.

Piecing a couple of things together on Kuokkanen. He missed the AHL All-Star game with what the team called “nagging injuries”. It was at the Canes request that he not play. He came back from whatever they were and played as recently as March 2. In a 10 thoughts column on March 13, Jason Shaya had this:

3. Janne Kuokkanen continues to sit out due to an injury that caused him to miss the AHL All-Star Game. As of now, there is no timetable for his return.

Still not anything specific but I agree, it all points to a joint-related injury.
