The Mother****ing Off Season Thread

All the other top teams use their best kids to fill their holes.

Sandin and Liljegren have to play next year.

Would be more confident in a Marlies d-man over Zaitsev. He just did not bring enough to the table, especially at that contract. Zaitsev and Brown are the 2 must trades and could save over $6 million in the process

Yeah, losing Zaitsev doesn't create a hole. It creates cap space to fill the hole that having Zaitsev as a top 4 dman creates. Replacing Hainsey/Zaitsev isn't particularly hard. It will be hard to add two quality top 4 dmen from outside the organization, but replacement/below replacement level players for less than $6 mill is easy.

The kids will get shots. Especially with Dermott out. I don't see any other way they can add quality dmen for that cheap.

Bobo's take is very promising though. People around the league value Zaitsev.

@TSNBobMcKenzie
Since the league was made aware this morning of Zaitsev’s availability, there have been multiple inquiries but it remains to be seen how many teams expect TOR to retain salary or make a soft/limited return deal because of the term/$ owed him.

Teams immediately calling is a great sign. Too bad for us we have no bargaining power and will have to take a soft return lol

Not having cap space is where the issue lies. They'll have to rely on a lot of rookies or extremely inexperienced players. I for one do not trust guys like Rosen.

Meh, this is no different than pretty much every other good team. Boston has trusted McAvoy, Grzelchyk, and Carlo over the last two years. Tampa trusted Cernak and Sergachev. Tampa is going to have to trust 1-2 more next year as well.

It's the name of the game in the cap era. In this case we need Dermott, Sandin, Lilly, Rosen, Grundstrom, etc to replace Gardiner, Hainsey, Zaitsev, Ozzy. I like our ****ing chances of coming out on the top side of that one.

We traded Grundstrom, he was a winger. We’re you thinking of someone else?

on the flipside, him asking for a trade is pretty sweet for us.

but how the hell does this guy thing he'll have it better somewhere else? his coach loved him here despite him sucking balls.
It seems to me that he’s an anxious, self-conscious guy that really can’t handle fan and media pressure.

So just going to a US market where there’s only one or two beat reporters covering the team, and 99.99% of the people you pass on the street have no idea that you’re a massively overpaid defenseman that sucks balls...well, that’s probably where the improvement would come from for Zaitsev.

We were already speculating that Dubas would try to trade Zaitsev. Why is this all of a sudden “problematic”? So weird.
Yeah, Bobo is being uncharacteristically melodramatic.

Trading David Clarkson left a hole in our lineup too, if we want to be super literal. But like Clarkson, it’ll be pretty tough for whatever warm body we plug into that “hole” to be worse than the guy they’re replacing.

I do wonder if this story is b.s the Leafs are feeding-out. You know this news does not come out today if that newspaper article did not came out. I think the Leafs want him gone.

After watching Timmy perform this year in the playoffs I would argue he is closer to ready than some give him credit for. He was their best all around dman

Still needs some work on his game but he wouldnt look out of place in the top 6

He looked great to me too. I’m not sure I buy that they don’t think he’s ready.

Would you rather have

Rielly-Hainsey
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Dermott-Ozzy

or

Rielly-Dermott
Muzzin-Lilly
Sandin-Rosen

I'm pretty sure I take the second group all day every day, and that's likely to be our starting point for the summer. Turn Zaitsev into one useful body in the bottom of that group and it takes a pretty big jump forward over what we started 2018-19 with.

Zaitsev asked for a trade (the role he has is not satisfying him, AFAIK, because he's much more versatile), but would be OK to stay in #LeafsForever He has a list of 10 teams where he won't go

You cant make a pass bruh. **** you mean you are more versatile?

The other thing is even if you want a vet RHD and don't want to rely on the kids its not hard to upgrade on Zaitsev. Sign Stralman for the Hainsey 2 year $2-3 mill deal. There are enough replacement level vets out there that won't cost you 5 years @ $4.5 and will be an upgrade on Zaitsev.
