2018-19 Canes Prospect and Calder Cup Winning Charlotte Checkers Thread

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Geekie scores in double OT. Cherckers going to the finals first time ever. Either playing Chicago or San Diego.

It never should have happened. On their previous time down the ice, the puck went into the netting. Everyone saw it except the 4 officials. Toronto picked up the puck, lost it at their blue line and the Cherkers came back and scored. The 4 on ice officials are all on split NHL-AHL contracts and worked between 24-40 NHL games this season. So this is what we have to look forward to when some of the dinosaurs like O’Halloran retire.

And watch for Geekie to make the Canes next season. He had a great 2nd half in Charlotte and is better than a point per game in the playoffs.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

This all becomes part of the story for the Canes going into the offseason. Ferland is going to leave, so who replaces him? Do the Canes sign ANYONE in the offseason or hold that spot for the likes of Necas, Geekie, Gauthier, Saarela to battle for?

Don't want to hear squadoosh from Marlies/Leafs people on it though... Marlies had clear possession in the neutral zone and a 3-on-2 after that missed whistle and screwed it up.

Good question(s).

I think its time Gauthier is given a shot, he's turned in a pretty good season after not really showing much prior. He has the size etc. Not sure if he has the wheels.

Geekie, I think he's earned it, pro rookie or not. Give him a serious look.

Necas: I like his development so far, but find for his type of game and his still slender frame - give him another season to develop.

Saarela: I have no clue if he's worth it.

Jeff Veilette tweeted the Toronto radio call of the play. The comments on the tweet were along those lines, the Marlies gained the initial advantage but screwed it up. Neutral zone turnovers and 1-8 on the PP gonna kill you, amirite?

FWIW, the guy who runs Canes Prospects Twitter has been singing Geekie’s praises all season, so much that I jokingly asked if he was Geekie’s agent. He thinks Gauthier is still a year away, he’s high on Geekie, thinks Necas starts at wing on the Canes next year and thinks Saarela has a chance. And don’t forget Kuokkanen, his season was ruined by injuries.

But where do they play? Ferland, McKegg, Williams, Poturalski And Brown are UFAs, Bishop and Aho are RFAs with no arbitration rights, Maenalanen and McGinn are RFAs with arbitration rights. While they pretty clearly will let Ferland walk, what about McKegg and Maenalanen? Does the whole offseason strategy hinge on what Williams decides?

We just don't have the open spots, but it might be time to break away from some and create open spots. McKegg, Maenalanen both bring respective elements that help our team, but not irreplaceble. And personally, I really hope we address the 3rd line center (or 1a/b center position) allowing Aho to slot into the #2 or be a 1a/1b type of thing.

Poturalski is another. You almost have to trade him if you aren't going to pencil him in cant make team

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

McKegg, Poturalski and Brown (and Carrick) are all very important in Charlotte. The question is whether they’ll accept 2 way contracts.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

McKegg WILL be iffy but Poturalski and Brown are going to sign 2 ways if they don't bolt for Europe. They might sign 2 ways with other NHL franchises if the guaranteed minimum is higher and/or they are clearly going to have a better chance to play in the NHL elsewhere. Carrick will still be an RFA.

I suspect Poturalski will leave as a UFA and sign somewhere else. Brown will stay on a 2 way (with a nice chunk of guaranteed minimum cash coming his way). McKegg I expect will leave as a UFA. Canes will qualify and then sign Carrick and he will get at least $250k guaranteed minimum on a 2 way.

I don't get Carrick. He's been pretty steady in Charlotte and I believe plays a more physical stay at home game. Just not NHL caliber enough? Still one of those, like Poturalski that leads his team in his position.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Carrick might be good enough to play on the 3rd pair for a few NHL teams or be their #7, but for us right now he is our what. #9? I would be surprised if we don't qualify and then re-sign Carrick. I also will be surprised if we lose him to waivers before next season. If some team feels he is good enough they will claim him. They all had their chance before this past season began.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Is Fleury that much better than Carrick? Not to me, and he plays with an edge that Fleury doesn’t have.

If any of the Charlotte UFA forwards or even Maenalanen leave, the Canes are going to have to sign a few vets to 2 way contracts, just for extra bodies. Mattheos is the only draft pick coming in and they signed Jacob Pritchard as an undrafted college free agent.

Fleury better start showing more of a snarl or more of something soon because he simply has been a dud for the most part.

McKegg has earned a one way contract somewhere, centers that can play a steady fourth line role and show a bit of offense are useful players to have around.

If Ferland truly is gone the Canes need to bring Maenalenen back for his size and rugged play in a bottom six role.

Necas is either a wing option out of camp or back to Charlotte.

Gauthier is an interesting option as a power forward with size to replace Ferland but it appears he’s not much of an agitator or a guy that can police things.

Saarella seems a lot like Zykov and may suffer a similar fate.

Geekie is raw and needs more seasoning.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Cherkers will play the Chicago Wolves for the Calder Cup. The Wolves are the Vegas Golden Knights affiliate. They had 98 points in the regular season, their .645 winning percentage was 2nd best in the west.

I agree with all this, expect I do except I'll bump up the expectations for Necas to definitely be on the NHL roster next season as a wing. That apparently was the whole point of the second half of this season for him, and he really didn't seem to buy into the idea until he got back from the World juniors. This is a kid who wants it HARD. He'll put in the work and I expect that they'll give him his shot. It's not like the Canes don't need the offense.

Gauthier will have to absolutely grab a slot by the neck and strangle it the was Foegele did this past camp. Otherwise, he's still got to learn what to do with that big old frame and find some consistent results in the A. Geekie and Mathios apparently have made the Canes VERY happy with their late season and playoff games. Both of those guys may well have climbed above Gauthier on the ladder. And I really wouldn't be surprised at all to see Brown with the big club next year in a 4th line/extra forward role.

My bet on the off season priorities ... they're looking to find a veteran offensive minded forward of whatever type and then figure out how to support that change from within. Couple that with adding Necas and I'll bet they're done in terms of the top 9. If you end up having to replace Williams as well, then make that two veteran forwards.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed forward Eetu Luostarinen to a three-year, entry-level contract. The contract will pay Luostarinen $750,000 for the 2019-20 season and $832,500 for the two seasons after that at the NHL level.

Nice to have some more center depth a little closer to the big club in the future.

Thanks you saving me having to type the kid's name. Here's hoping I have to learn how at some point. Decent prospect from the looks of things, and his line mate this season (Alex Texier) didn't look out of place with the Blue Jackets in a few games late this season. By all accounts they're considered to be on roughly the same level.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Thanks you saving me having to type the kid's name.

There's a reason that in the playoff threads I was on a first name basis with Saku Mäenalanen... it's a lot easier to type "Saku gets called for another penalty" than copy and paste his last name and remembering where the umlauts are placed. If Eetu makes his way to the big club, it'll probably be the same thing... although don't we have another Eetu in the system? (Too lazy to look right now.)
