2019 Carolina Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Is there an easy way to find the number of 1 way contracts that teams bury in the minors each year?

I know we are always low, but suspect other clubs with bigger purse strings are higher (but much higher?).

Is that too, something changing here?

Yeah, cannot walk away from that Forsberg arbitration result. And THAT walk away minimum number is even higher than the 'arbitration period buyout' minimum number. The 'walkaway arbitration result' minimum number started at $3.5 million in the current CBA and has been raised each year as the cap has gone up. The 'minimum AAV arbitration period buyout' amount started at $2.5 million in the current CBA.

So the minimum arbitration walkaway AAV is something like $4.83 million. The award needs to be that or greater in terms of 1 or 2 year AAV for a team to be able to walk away.

In terms of CAP HIT, Forsberg won't generate one if he is in the AHL. But I highly doubt the Canes have any desire at all to pay a subpar goalie $775k to play in the AHL. If they elect to get rid of Forsberg via a trade he is now a liability more than an asset in any trade we might make.

I don't know how this is going to play out, but I would be stunned if both Reimer and Forsberg are with this franchise come October. I would put the current odds at:

50% only Forsberg or Reimer is still here
50% Neither are here
0% Both are here

If neither Forsberg or Reimer are here, who is the #3 if Ned falters as a 30 start backup? The Canes will try to get someone with NHL experience on a 2 way contract that we will either need to sign or most likely trade for. That said, there are a number of other teams that have guys who might be their #3 making what Forsberg just got awarded. Alex Lyon (Philly), Jon Gillies (Calgary), Collin Delia (Chicago), Garrett Sparks (Vegas) for example. This arbitration result hopefully didn't surprise the Canes, there were plenty of other goalies with similar comparables on one way deals across the league. If the Canes elect to somehow rid themselves of both Riemer and Forsberg, they will be lucky if they can get a Scott Wedgewood type guy with some NHL experience on a 2 way (with a minimum guarantee). After all, Tampa has 4 other goalies right now on their roster AND Wedgewood (who they signed to a 2 way this offseason). The Canes might end up having to compete with Tampa in the 'we would like to get rid of goalies' market. Oskar Dansk would be another trade possibility I would think, having slid to #4 on the Vegas depth chart (he has as 2 way this season). But again, the bigger issue is what it would take to get rid of Forsberg...if you want to just purge that salary its going to cost us something else.

With Darling gone, the Canes don’t have any buried contracts. The teams are cap obligated for any amount over $1 million. CapFriendly shows them in a separate category below the active roster. For example, they show Tampa with Condon and Domingue buried right now.

San Jose immediately signed Carrick to a 2 year/$1.4 million 2 way contract. He gets $200k in the AHL the first year and $225k the 2nd year.

That is a perfectly fair deal for Carrick given his experience. Kyle Wood is going to make $80k in Charlotte this season. I suspect that was a huge factor as to why this trade happened

So as far as Dundon is concerned, its sort of a verbal contract and I will let you know 12 months out that I would like our arrangement to end. Except the NHL bylaws will require an actual contract with a GM be in place by the end of August. Hopefully Waddell stays because its not going to be easy to find anyone experienced who is going to accept that kind of year to year arrangement. And while we might be making decisions by committee, its pretty important (at least to me) to have someone with the GM title who actually knows how to navigate ALL the things a GM has to do. That is not always an easy guy to find.

This is where Dundon's aversion to convention runs up against the reality of the culture of NHL management. I think he got a pretty good taste of that last year when he struggled to find GM candidates who would even interview with him ... and then at least two who did interview with him turned around and trashed him to their media buddies. Fenton is absolutely 100% the guy who made a huge deal out of that $400K salary offer, which Dundon basically got crucified for in the hockey press. Because for some weird reason hockey writers take it as a personal insult when anybody tries to do anything different in an NHL front office. NOBODY gatekeeps with the fury of the NHL press.

And look ... it's Tom's money and his organization. He can conduct his business however he wants, and then as a consumer I get to either endorse his methods with my money or not. That's fine. I'd love to see the Canes settle in and operate in a sensible fashion, but that's probably just not going to happen with Tom Dundon at the wheel. We can either get used to that or we vote with our feet and bail. I don't think he's changing anytime soon. I saw a Caps fan compare Dundon to early Ted Leonsis, before the realities of the NHL smoothed out most of his disruptive maverick tendencies. Frankly, I miss the old Ted. The one who shook stuff up and asked tough questions in the Governor's meetings. If ever there was a league that needed disrupting, it's this one. So I'm inclined to let Tom be Tom to some extent. He has proven to me that he's serious about this venture and that he's willing to put his own money on the line when it matters.

You gotta love the part where Dundon says if Don thinks he needs to better himself somewhere else for more money then Don should absolutely have every opportunity to go and find that! You would simply hope that Dundon backs that talk up by standing by Waddell if he does not get the Wild job and decides to stay on as GM and not get the old blackballed treatment moving forward...

For the record ... one other thing I absolutely LOVE about this whole situation with Waddell is the irony. The ENTIRE hockey media mocked Dundon for hiring Waddell last year. He was old, he was a crappy GM, he was out of the loop ... remember? I mean, I didn't really disagree with any of that, but the manic glee that those people took in pointing and laughing at Dundon was palpable.

Now ... "how could he let his successful GM talk to another team? What kind of idiot doesn't have his GM locked in after they make it to the Conference Finals?" Honestly. Do these people ever listen to themselves?

Amen brother.

An organ grinder and a monkey would be more entertaining!

My initial concerns about TD and his style, viewpoint, methods and inexperience are resurfacing.

Why? He’s clearly committed to trying to make the team successful and willing to spend his money to make it happen.
