Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

Personally, I find the team going the series distance and coming up short every time intensely dissatisfying.

Always taking optimism to another level. I love him.

Leafs: lose in every first round ever

Zeke: yeah well at least they won a couple games!

Just absolutely zero standards. I love it.

Truth be told, each of those series could have gone the other way on a different bounce or two.

Oh of course. But to be content with the "we could have maybe won a round with a bit more luck Stanley Cup" every single year is another story. Personally for me, winning a round is more important. And I have low standards for them too. Zeke just takes it to another level.

Preston: so much luck in every series - especially ones that go the distance it's really just a coin flip.

Also Preston: no difference between getting swept and going the distance

Zeke: I'm happier losing in the first round than in a later round if it means they get swept in the later round.

Preston: I'd like to see them win a round

Realtalk: everyone is kidding themselves if they think they'd be more satisfied with the leafs right now if they had won a series or two and then got routed.

To me, the issue is largely who they draw each year. Not an easy match up yet. BJs were the easiest opponent they've faced and their goalies went nuclear.

People would be happier losing to Columbus in the pre-first round than losing in the eastern Conference finals? Huh? Who are these people?

Well BJ's would have been easier if they outplayed them by a lot more than they did like we saw with Tampa, where luck became less of a factor in the end. But I agree, that one was basically a coin flip. Two similarly tiered teams and the series was ultimately decided by goaltending.

They took a step back this season. It is what it is.

But this has nothing to do with preferring first round losses. That's just weird.

The important takeaway is that these series don't scream for radical change. Much of what ails the Leafs the past four years has been evident throughout the regular season (RD, centre depth, goaltending). The only thing I've seen in these series that screams for change is Fred's backbreakers.
