TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

My brain would be like a bigger swap. Signing Forsberg, trading Nylander (get Muzzin replacement that is young/controlled) and Muzzin (get picks/futures - can use those futures for whatever we need come deadline).

Or just keep Nylander, who will do Forsberg things for 2 million dollars less, clear cap space (Muzz, Mrazek, Kerfoot) and go get that Muzz replacement without trading Willy (We have more than enough kids and picks to move. Sandin + Robertson/Knies + 1st gets you into the discussion on any defender in the league likely to be available).

I'm not 100% against trading Willy, but replacing Willy with a guy who is basically 65 games of Willy but for more money, strikes me as a bad idea. I don't want us making moves with names attached just for the sake of making moves. I buy the argument that Nylander has been 90% of the guy we wish he would be and that we're running out of runway on his "cheap" deal and I would pardon anyone who was skeptical about re-upping 28 yr old Willy for 8/72 two summers from now. But we would absolutely need to replace him, and preferably for similar money or less.

I just don’t get this refusal to trust our own guys. And I don’t know when Sandin fell off everyone’s like list here. Dude could be fantastic, and looks to be, but we want to ship him plus prospects plus a 1st out for another D?? When have we ever lost a playoff series because of D? Why don’t we want a to run with a guy who can be solid and calm in our zone and dangerous in theirs?? Just don’t get it.

And I love Forsberg, really wanted him as a rental, but not sure I want to sign that $9m deal. Don’t know how we’d fit that and pay the raises and get goalies.

Because Raz has struggled against higher levels of competition (largely because he's a 21 yr old average skating midget who is built like a 13 yr old Dutch girl) and as a left handed defender, is 1) super easy to replace unless he's a proper stud...seriously, maybe the easiest thing in the league to find is a #4-5 LHD who can move the puck but is suspect defensively 2) In a log jam on a blueline with Rielly, Muzzin, Gio all lefties.

and I'm not trying to punt on him or anything, I'm just saying that if our nerds and scouts agree that say, Chychrun is a stud waiting to breakout as a beast #1 and the cost includes Raz...well, c'est la vie. I like him plenty. If we get him on the mexican supplements and he finds 10 pounds of good weight and a step or two of explosiveness in his skating, he can be a star. But I wouldn't let him stand in the way of us getting what we believed to be a top pairing star defender in their prime.

I think he’s awesome. Everyone is selling him way short. And wanting us to sell him way early. You’re basically describing Dermott, not Sandin. That trade proposal has the potential to be one of our worst trades ever if Sandin lives up to his potential, and there’s no reason to believe he won’t, and becomes as good or almost as good as whoever we trade him for, for a fraction of the price. Plus we’re also losing Robertson and a 1st.

So get some Bogo type UFA for $700k and let them hang in the press box till needed.

Why would you not want another scorer over an old, expensive, oft injured dman?

By the playoffs the Leafs are adding Robertson, Knies, Sandin and Lilly to the playoff roster. Which is a big talent infusion to the depth. If you could also turn Muzz and Kerfoots $9 mill into some high end talent that would be a stupid team.

I'll be really upset if they do a kubina for exelby deal for Muzzin. The way everyone talks about him it sounds like that's all they'd get for a busted, old, useless player.

But in my mind the guy just had a remarkable series playing toughs against the best team in the NHL. He just sounds like a guy that I'd want dubas to be in on (if he truly is going to be given away for nothing) if he wasn't a Leaf right now.

Anyway if it's truly a pure cap dump just keep him. You can do that trade next year. It would be probably be an easier deal to make next year anyway. Only 1 year to digest + the NTC becomes modified.
