It's been a long four years, the return of the magic number thread

They don’t have to trade Laf.

No. And if they don’t act rashly, they won’t trade him at a price that would interest other GMs. Trading Slaf and (especially) Reinbacher doesn’t really solve our need to add to the young core.

I don’t think we’re in a swap position yet, still need to add.

I’m not advocating trading either for Laf. but if you want him, that’s the likely cost. I don’t see Laf. coming here.

Fair.

The Habs strenghts are the prospect pool and picks. Need to find the right partner in that context.

e.g. start with Hage and Calgary’s pick.

I’m not saying we can’t t acquire Laf, but certainly not for Laine. Rags would would likely want Slaf or Reinbacher in return.
What they want and what they can get are 2 different things. Right now, at face value, Laf is not worth more than Laine and certainly not worth a Slaf or an Orville. At the end of the day the Rangers either believe in Lafreniere or they don't. If they don't, Laine is a decent return for a player who they consider to be a bust. If they do, they either hang on to him or demand a king's ransom (which, right now, they'll never get)

They’re not going to trade Laf at this time.

The Rangers don't build. They don't care about prospects. They want finished products who are ready to contribute right away. That's the whole reason why Lafreniere would even be available now; because they're impatient for him to be a finished product. The last thing they want is a player even further behind the curve in development because they only ever care about winning right now.

I could see Laine with retention for a year and one of our secondary prospects that are now starting to produce. Especially if Laval wins the Calder Cup.
