2025 NHL UFA/Trade Thread

Hutson seems ok on the RHS, but then again he’s pretty much a rover. And then it’s Carrier and Reinbacher on the right.

Mailloux is almost surplus and will be more valuable to the club as a trade asset.

Horvat would be great.

NYI needs to think about a full tear down. Mediocre veteran team with nothing on the farm. They could get a haul for Horvat, Barzal and Dobson. Go for McKenna or Dupont.

I'd take Horvat, but I would prefer Barzal, who has more offensive talent. He's also signed until 2030-31 and with the cap continually rising I don't see it as hard to digest. If the Isles are indeed going to a tear-down I'd give them our 2 first rounders, Mailloux, and Dobes or Primeau.

4 players for Barzal?

Theres potential the market “may” get flooded with talent this summer (oversupply) if enough bubble teams decide to tank for McKenna which potentially would drive down acquisition cost (relatively speaking)

NYI have reportedly lost $80M during their stay at Belmont Park Village but owners are ok with it expecting to quickly recoup $$ when team is competitive - $$ are being raked in via non hockey related businesses their luxury shopping complex

The firm of Rubenstein and Schwartz can do their financial engineering on the 80 mil part

2 draft picks, which may or may not amount to anything (and in the mid-first round, probably a 4th liner or 3rd pair defenseman at best, based on the averages) a defenseman who, at the NHL level, may never be a top 4, and a goalie who might be a 1B if they pan out.

Besides, it's not like we would be the only team trying to land Barzal so we need to overpay somewhat. For a team wanting to rebuild, 2 first rounders and 2 prospects are just what the doctor ordered in exchange for a guy who will be in a rocking chair by the time the Isles are ready to contend for a Cup (if ever)

For Barzal, he gets to fulfill his father's wish, and he gets to pad his stats by playing with Demidov.

HuGo said they would rather overpay in trade than for UFA. But if market is fluid there might be interesting options.

Might also be a way to unload a contract.

IF NYI decide to go down rebuild route (I.e Hunt for McKenna), wonder what a Barzal + Dobson package would cost? Would quantity of NHL ready prospects + picks be of interest

Ex: both 2025 1st + unprotected 2026 1st + Mailloux + Engstrom + Beck + Dobes?
