2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

.28 vs .18 gpg

Both pretty shit

Yes, but let's not pretend that the one isn't hilariously worse than the other. Panarins gpg goes down a bit in the playoffs (82 game pace of 33 down to 24) , Mitch's almost cuts in half from 28 to 15.

But again, and kind of importantly...2 series closing goals, other big goals that have helped a much worse team get further than we've ever been twice over the last few years.

Chara was definitely not considered can't-miss elite dman as a UFA. Not sure he was even generally considered a #1 dman tbh.

Nahh.

People didn’t quite realize how good he was, since there was a legitimate debate which one of Redden or Chara the Sens should keep.

But he was definitely widely considered a legit top-pairing/#1 defenseman by the end of his time in Ottawa and when the Bruins signed him.

Yeah…. But he wasn’t seen as a future first ballot HOFer…. and he signed with Bruins at 29 so it’s not like anyone expected him to get much better than a solid #1

Ottawa screwing up with their evaluation of Redden vs Chara does not = Chara became elite only when he went to Boston. He was obviously far more impactful to Ottawa than Marner is for the leafs, don't be revisionist homers. I would argue that there aren't many players in the league that were as dominant as this player at that point in his career, so it's more about that than Marner being shit. He was absurdly good.

From Chat GPT

Outside Boston and ForumIce poster Goldust (later rebranded as Preston), many pundits questioned whether Chara was worth a $7.5 million AAV. His reputation as “the world’s hardest shot” and his All-Star 2007 appearance hinted at star potential, but the true greatness only emerged later, when he won the Norris in 2009 and hoisted the Stanley Cup in 2011.

I remain convinced that the only reason the Sundin-era Leafs won their last playoff series again the Sens was that Chara got injured in game five.

Up until that point, Chara was absolutely wrecking our shit and dominating our top scorers. Then he went down and the Leafs went on to win games six and seven of that series.
