2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

Treliving isn’t Dubas. He’s let good players walk before rather than giving them market-breaking deals.

Willy got paid, but he scores goals, shows up in the playoffs, and outplayed his last contract. The anti-Marner, if you will.

If Marner and Tavares want top dollar they’re both gone.
 
If Tavares wants $7M, you absolutely tell him to take a hike.

And this stuff about Mitch already having decided to leave is music to my ears.

I just hope Treliving doesn’t rush out to spend all the freed up cap space on bloated contracts to substandard UFA’s. If a legitimate difference-maker is there for the taking, then go for it. But don’t do some dumb shit like hand Nik Ehlers a superstar contract out of desperation, like Treliving did with Huberdeau after he lost Tkachuk.

Better to leave the cap space unspent and see if any good big ticket players shake loose on the trade market during the season.

Don’t get me wrong, that’s fair-ish market value for him.

But after seven years of him being one of the top players in the league, him not ever playing to that level in the regular season or playoffs and the team accomplishing fuck-all during that entire period, if his priority is still to max out his AAV, he can take a hike and go do that somewhere else.
 
This Marner situation is pretty incredible. Local kid just totally willing to set his legacy here on fire. He must be extremely sour on the city if he won't even engage with the team. Will be interesting if some team gives him $14M+ on a 4 year deal (as rumoured so he can maximize career earnings) with all the NMC shit. Not a hard pill to swallow if you don't give up any assets to sign him I guess. Then he'll bend that team over in 4 years.

I do find this unbelievable. And yeah, he might be so sick of the pressure and criticism, but his first contract negotiation was so awful and helped lead to the hate.
I think one day he'll sit back and regret this.

…or he’ll just continue to grow ever more bitter, petulant and certain in his belief that Leaf fans and the organization have wronged him and never gave him the respect and adulation he was entitled to.
