Marner playing this exactly how he would have played it anyway, Tre just put a wrinkle in his plans by not guaranteeing him that Toronto will match another team's best offer. Mitch is a family man now, so he and his young family will need time to pick his destination, if it's not Toronto.

Even if he finds a suitor for $14m or more, it's not going to be a team with a chance to win since they'll have too much money allocated to their other stars. And if they need to ditch a couple of top players to fit him in, then they wouldn't be improving, so what's the point.

He's really going to show us who he is now. Does he really just care about the money and nothing else, or does he want to win, and does he value his situation with the Leafs? I still won't believe he's the type to take $14M to bolt to Utah. I have to think this is all still just an effort to leverage things up against the Leafs and resign at the price he wants.

I mentioned this early on in the season when I pointed out that the players looked miserable, but I think there may be some rift between Matthews and Marner. Something seemed off in their interactions, and then the whole 4 Nations thing happened, and then those last few awful games of the Florida series. I can't help but wonder if their relationship got strained this year and part of what we're seeing is due to that.
