2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

why would Marchand leave the panthers.

He might stay but the stars are aligning for the guy to make serious bank

— crazy playoff run
— FA class is weak
— for the first time in a while, many teams have cap space and no teams are in full tank mode — aka almost everyone is in buy mode

Nah, fuck the Chicago guys, unless there is literally nothing better to do with the space next year.

Bennett Marchand is fun as hell. Bennett Ekblad would be the better, less fun, move. Marchand Ekblad would be fun but riskier.

Bennett is going to break the bank though. Someone is going to pay him like a guy who can score 50 goals, not get 50 points, given the way he's been going in the postseason. I don't know if the Leafs will overpay to get him, but it would be so Leafs to lose Marner, get Bennett who will break down just in time for us to get no benefit, and then have no space to even make McD an offer.

Each of the three Panthers guys is immensely tempting to add. Filling Marner's money in with two of them would be a coup really.

Assuming we get into the playoffs and then it's all about best of 7, if we have a healthy roster and two of them instead of Marner, while Florida doesn't properly replace them on their roster, that might be our best chance at a cup in the Matthews era.

The best strategy might be to grab whichever of Bennett or Ekblad you can get long term, and then fill Marchand's pockets with an overpay on a one year deal.

This guy can get 4 million+ per in Toronto in commercials
I keep hearing this and Im not sure I buy the argument. For years people (especially Leafs fans) have called Marchand the most despised player in the NHL but now he's going to become a Leaf and get all these endorsements?

Leafs or not, people will still hate him and advertisers only care about selling stuff. They arent going to spend big money on endorsements for such a polarizing character.

There will be many suitors for both. Either they take less to stay in Florida or they go for a ransom. Both are under 30 and every team will be making offers.
