2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

They tried to trade him.

I'd tell the organization to fuck off as well.

Trevling is known for fucking this type of thing up.

Leafs are just lucky this time that it is a good thing

Nahh. Treliving trying to trade him this season isn’t the source of this. Mitch and his family have been obsessed with slights both real and imagined from both the organization and the fanbase for the entirety of his tenure here.

And to be clear—I have an extremely low opinion of Treliving. It’s not like I’m riding to his defense here. I just don’t think it’s fair or accurate to pin this on him or what happened at the deadline. That request for Mitch to waive his NMC came after it was already plainly obvious Mitch had zero intention of re-signing here and the relationship was thoroughly broken.

Not sure what came first. But once you tried to trade him and it didn't work. This is exactly how you should expect him to react

This guy could retire as the all time leading scorer for an original 6 team he grew up idolizing but he isn’t going to because he doesn’t want to take responsibility when he doesn’t succeed.

Such a bitch.
He obviously thinks he was mistreated.

Ship sailed and he burned the dock behind him.

You've got this twisted. We approached him last off season to try to extend him, but didn't want to pay his extortionist prices (the word from the media was that if Treliving could have signed him for 13.5 x 8, he would have....which means Marner's ask was above or even well above that).

He was only approached about potentially waiving his NMC at the deadline, when his camp was asked if he still wanted to stay. If he wanted to stay, we weren't interested in dealing him. If he wanted out, we had a deal in place. They indicated Mitch wanted to stay and would use his NMC if required, so no Rantanen deal for us.

I think Treliving is one of the bigger morons in the league, but he didn't do Mitch wrong here.

It doesn't make sense.

It makes tons of sense if you can stop trying to overlay your personal motivations onto his. He doesn't care about the things you think you would care about in his position and more than that, Mitch has a long and established track record of clearly disliking people saying anything bad about him, insisting that he should shoulder any of the blame for team failures, etc.

Have you considered that he's just a whiny bitch?

Marner’s’ father is

Paul was honestly our first red flag. Not that we should blanket judge someone according to their father's character, but just about every video of him watching Mitch play as a kid tells us that he's the worst kind of hockey father that anyone who has spent time around a rink knows way too well.

I just can't believe that someone in his position wouldn't recognize the zillion reasons why he's in the absolute perfect spot for him.

The fact that they may even want to bring him back is outrageously fortunate for him considering the playoff track record. That he doesn't even want to consider it and negotiate makes zero sense.

All this for what, an extra $500k per year (over the $13.5m)? It's impossible.

Treliving should never have been hired in the first place. This market is a job for an exceptional GM, not an average or below average one.

He is not who you think he is, or want him to be.

Because you're not him. This clearly isn't the perfect spot for him. He doesn't like the attention, or the pressure. This is clear as fucking day at this point. This market isn't for everyone, regardless if you came cruising out from between your mother's legs within a 50km radius of the CN Tower.
