a smart regime should never come to this endingI don't have a problem with sign and trades. It sucks to lose a player for nothing. If you can get a little something for them, it seems fair to me.

No, he was RFA.I think Tkacthuk was a UFA flipped to Florida
Disagree. Keeping an expiring contract for a playoff run is cheaper than trading for a rental.a smart regime should never come to this ending

Leafs were not a contender on a video game , who is kidding whoDisagree. Keeping an expiring contract for a playoff run is cheaper than trading for a rental.
If this season the Habs are looking like contenders in February, and Laine and Matheson are having solid seasons.... they'd be stupid to trade them away. So, they keep them and go for the Cup. In the off season, if a sign and trade presents itself, you do it.
At the same time the team he wants may need to clear cap space to make it happenI don't see sign and trades for UFAs ever being a big thing in hockey. The difference between being allowed to sign for 7 and 8 years isn't enough incentive to forego a bidding war.
There will be the odd case, but it's always going to be very rare.
Agreed, although there is an argument that his contract situation should have been addressed last summer.Disagree. Keeping an expiring contract for a playoff run is cheaper than trading for a rental.

At the same time, both Colorado and Carolina traded Rantanen despite being a contending team.Disagree. Keeping an expiring contract for a playoff run is cheaper than trading for a rental.

he should have been moved for a haul ...fucked up one of the few remaining assets to scoreAgreed, although there is an argument that his contract situation should have been addressed last summer.
Laine wont be back unless its a Bargain Harold discount and 10% lessspeaking of expiring guys, we have two of significance -- Matheson and Laine.
Being the #3 offensive d-man on the depth chart is a fragile spot, so I can see Matheson being traded this summer..especially since we have multiple needs up front.
It's easier to keep Laine, because he's like a trade deadline rental with upside. If he can build on last year, and stay healthy, we might want to keep him, and he might want to stick around in a good situation for him.
I wasn't specifically talking about the Leafs or anyone else. Just disagreeing with your assertion that "a smart regime should never come to this ending."Leafs were not a contender on a video game , who is kidding who
After that Habs playoff debacle , that core was fucken done
Columbus , Habs how many more inferior teams do you need
They have no spine and will to win 4 rounds
So now 4 years later your losing a 100 point player when you could have got the moon years ago , terrible asset management
Your theory is great if your a true contender not pretender
regime has to know here they stand in the NHL food chain and act accordinglyI wasn't specifically talking about the Leafs or anyone else. Just disagreeing with your assertion that "a smart regime should never come to this ending."
Exactly and that proves that your statement is wrong.regime has to know here they stand in the NHL food chain and act accordingly
Most regimes only patch to futilityExactly and that proves that your statement is wrong.
Exactly. It's one thing for fans to be delusional about how good their team is but management should always live in the real world and be willing and able to know when their team is a fraud. MLSE drank the same Kool-Aid as their fanbase.regime has to know here they stand in the NHL food chain and act accordingly
