Keep giving up your firsts
and for another player on the wrong side of 30, to boot...
Keep giving up your firsts
I have vague memories of playing floor hockey in gym class in grade 1.....the other team were so inept, none of them could do a wrist shot. Though to be fair, only a few of us on our team could (heh, I ain't saying if I was one of those few players...). Our goalie ended up just laying on the floor - across the net....stopping all shots obviously. He got so bored, he ended up taking a nap during the game..
.
The thing about firing wristers at the net from 60 feet away is that they only go in if they 1) are heavily screened & 2) find a weirdo gap in the pile of bodies or 3) are tipped. They're generally just bad, low percentage shots.
Hughes already had a bum shoulder and smartly secured his bagDom is out with his annual list of best/worst contracts but what I took from it is that Sean McIndoe is a national treasure
Excerpt from his piece
The list of best contracts proved two things: The model doesn’t understand how good that one guy on your favorite team is because it doesn’t watch the games, nerd. And also, Jack Hughes probably really hates reading this list every year. In fairness, the player who ranks No. 1 on this list signed his maximum-length $8 million deal in 2021 when he was 20 years old and the cap was flat, and nobody could have predicted that his production would increase and the cap would rise, except for literally everyone on the planet.
Oh, and be sure to check out Dom’s writeup for Sam Bennett, which is as close as you’ll come this week to seeing a human and a computer throw haymakers at each other in an alleyway.
No rush. He's not going anywhere.August 1st, no McDavid contract. I'm kind of surprised, I figured it would get done pretty quickly.
Leon was in September iirc

He can sign for 8 years and still be easily traceable if at some point he wants out or the team does. Contract status is meaningless to players that elite. No one should be surprised if he tells them he wants to play out the year and see where things stand.
That is absolutely what he should do if his goal is to win a cup, Leafs or no Leafs. Why commit early to this Oilers team? It's not going to be improving based on the roster it has, and the goaltending situation has never been addressed, so what's the rush. If anything, you force them to make the team much better to convince you to stay. He's already made a shit ton of money. He can afford to risk the very unlikely catastrophic injury he might suffer in the contract year.
