Habs Season Thread: Regular Season 2025-26

What's your expectation of Dobson because he's been very calm and consistent in the first 3 games. He's a good partner for Matheson.
I like Dobson, he’s a great addition to the team, I just don’t think he’s a 9.5M player, and thought this from the moment he signed his contract.

Again nothing against the player but he’s paid like a franchise D, which I don’t think he is.

Don’t think Dobson’s game merits 8% cap hit = very good 2nd line / 2nd pairing player?

He was paid what he needed to be paid in order to be acquired. If the Habs had drafted Dobson like they did Hutson, they wouldn't need to pay him as much. But they had to pay retail for him.

This management never would have given him $10.5 million.
Wait to see what Suzuki, Caufield, Hutson etc all get on their next / UFA deals

How quickly fans forget MB extracting the same sweetheart hometown discounts from Price, Pacioretty & Gallagher on their pre-UFA contracts

This wasn’t some tremendous genius breakthrough - Habs have been using bonuses to attract & keep 🇺🇸 resident players for a long time: Gionta, Cole, Cammalieri, Toffoli, and Petry forewent UFA twice because of it. Even Price was bonus loaded

🇨🇦 teams will get screwed w new CBA as max bonus payout is reduced from 90% to 60%

11 and 31 are shit contracts pre UFA , are you kidding me

Price was already damaged goods and 11 is easily replaceable , both would have been gone under Hugo

Caufield wont see another Habs contract IMO

Price 6 yrs $39M signed in 2012 ($6.5M AAV)

Pacioretty 6 yrs $27M in 2012 ($4.5M AAV)

Gallagher 6 yrs $22.5M in 2015 ($3.75M AAV)

Same pre-UFA hometown discount contracts signed by present Habs core.

Sh*t contracts? Chugging rose?

I was referring to their final contracts for 11 and 31

Plus those contracts over a decade ago is a different world as agents and players never got into taking more

Tons of contracts became team favorable in time, few went for gold after ELC

There are few discounts today , NHL has caught up with other sports

I take it you weren’t around when Parise & Suter signed their deals (13 yr / $98M) or Weber offer sheet by Philly (14 yr / $110M) or Clarkson (7r / $37M) etc…

Agents ALWAYS are into “taking more”, it’s their job

Bergeron deal was the exception not the rule even 10+ yrs ago - as Hughes said last week Patrice told him he wants a below market deal to allow Bruins to add assets

I didn’t even touch on Draisatil 2nd contract which changed the entire landscape for players coming out of ELC

We are not talking about the same type of deals

Parise and Suter got paid at 27 not coming out of ELC at 21-22 for players who barely shave

Back then most good players didnt get these mega deals you see now know in the 8-10% cap range
