Why couldn't this fucking cunt at least do top 7 protected? Fucking anything but top 5. There is no fucking chance that Boston drew a hard line at top 5. That trade was an obvious slam dunk for them.

Boston still would’ve been absolutely giddy to do the deal with top-10 protection, or even lottery protection period. No way they actually had any reasonable expectation the Leafs would fall this far this year.

Just a testament to what a shit GM and negotiator Treliving is.

the odds of finishing in the bottom 10 seemed inconceivable a year ago
Even more reason to believe Boston would have accepted top 10 protected. If it was so inconceivable that top 5 vs top 10 is essentially a throw-in clause, they should have practiced some risk management for once and drew a hard line at top 10.

They were probably shocked themselves

So for tonight we're gonna want a Leafs loss, Rangers win and Seattle getting at least 1 point.

In this scenario, the Leafs will have clinched at least 5th last. With 4th last still on the table if they lose vs Ottawa and Rags get a point vs the resting Bolts.

so we're likely either mckenna/stenburg if we win top 2 lottery spots or maybe malholtra if we just squeak in?

or nothing. and hopefully a 2nd if LA gets in but also possibly no second.

Lots of good d available too if they don't get top 2. Was a great year to have a top 10 protected pick because apparently not much seperates picks 3-10.

Another testament … getting less for Laughton than the Rangers got for Sam Carrick.

He was stunningly incompetent. My hope was he just looked dumb. But the guy was what he ate.

Pelley went from talking extension with Tre at the Olympic break to observing Tre's process at the deadline and being horrified and firing him weeks later. It looked like disorganized chaos and insane ineptitude from afar, it must have been some sight to see up close.

Bit of an indictment of Pelley in there as well. Pelley was hired in January 2024. He waited 2 yrs to get a handle on what hockey ops looked like in operation? Even if we want to give him a pass for the duration of the Shanahan tenure because it was Shanny's portfolio, that ended almost a year ago.

Yeah he moved waaaaaaay too slow. All is forgiven if a miracle happens and they keep their pick. And they hire a nerd and maybe a president. And then hopefully that's the last we see of Pelley involved in hockey operations.

Corporate pussies. The core problem with corporate ownership of sports franchises is that when you lack the right people between the corp and the playing surface, problems completely fatal to performance linger long enough to be era or decade defining. The idea of having to make important decisions quickly (that doesn't including laying off 30% of your workforce to temporarily juice stock price before bonus deadlines) is alien to them.

Didn’t it take the Leafs losing a bunch of games post Olympics to seal Tre’s faith?

If Tre fired Berube in December, the Leafs would have improved quite a bit and he might have been able to convince Pelley it was the coach’s fault

At the end of the day, being too slow to fire Tre, being too slow to fire Berube is the only thing that could be affording them the opportunity to get a top 5 pick. So if it actually happens, fuck it, we'll call it a net positive. Sometimes good things come out of organizations being inept. As long as they hire the right GM and give him full control moving forward, all is forgiven for the hilarious mismanagement of the last 18 months.
