The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Pelley's such a turd, man. I don't think that it was him picking these two helped the skepticism - he really does not inspire confidence.

He's clearly a narcissist who revels in masquerading as a big shit sports executive, and given the way he kinda squirmed about explaining the power structure, he ain't letting go unless the owner replaces him.

He sucks at talking and he's clearly pretentious or whatever, but this was the best and most extensive process they've ever had to find a GM. And they landed on a pure data guy. Maybe it was an accident, but I have no complaints about where things landed in the end.

I will say that he's clearly not well liked within MLSE. Mirtle and Jonas were saying they had like 20+ people reach out to them about his antics during the deadline and people within the organization were pissed about it.

Which again.. was arguably probably a good thing. He needed to get in there and be disruptive to whatever the fuck Tre was doing. So it's hard to know for sure if he's entirely in the wrong there. He probably could have done that with more tact while being more likable tho.

If he stays out of the way now like he's seemingly doing with the other MLSE clubs, then I'd say it was all worth it. They took a PR hit but I think they landed on the right person in the end.

Yeah if he's the one that put the brakes on doofus trading Knies for another Lurch dman, we should be thankful for that. Instead of setting the org back 4 years it could have been 8. Now get out of the way and let the guy you pinned your future employment on cook.

At this point, I wish I cared what "20+ people" in the organization thinks about how Pelley acted during the deadline. We didn't hear a fucking peep about how concerned the people in the organization were as Treliving and Berube ran the team off of a cliff. I truly don't give a fuck about what they think now about the period of time that led to Treliving's firing.

My biggest wish/hope at this point is Chayka + Mats come in, Chayka quickly revamps the blueline into something good and replaces Berube. We then bounce back on the ice, and that buys Chayka the time to quietly clean house of anyone not down with the new program. We're a deeply stupid organization that needs a hard reset of the people in the front office.

All of this shit goes away with some success on the ice. Chayka is eating all of the crankiness that Treliving's ineptitude has generated around the team (which, ironically, Treliving seems to be getting away from without a scratch on his reputation)

I don't get the "Tre is getting off easy" narrative that I'm reading here,

Treliving was fired. Isn't that enough? Nobody in the media defended him. Everyone saw The Leafs go from top of the standings to the bottom....and they might not even keep their pick because of a trade everyone now acknowledges was a disaster.

How many negative think pieces on a dead man do you need?

even one actually negative article would have been nice.

that could have been from when he was hired based on his disastrous calgary stint. could have been about all the disastrous moves he made here while he was making them. could have been about his disastrous handling of mitch marner. could have been after he was fired based on his disastrous tenure here.

one would have been cool.

There was 1 when he was hired, from Jonas Siegel vs 5000 on Chayka.

And then 0 after he was fired. Just Pelley hit pieces on him deciding to save the organization from Tre. I would have liked to see just 1 hit piece personally. Just a single acknowledgement that he set back the organization

I haven't really seen them tbh? I haven't heard a single of these guys who are criticizing Chayka even acknowledge Tre was a disaster actually.

Nvm, I just read the article that Jonas wrote about him after he was hired. Jonas keeps referencing it as if it was a scathing review, but it was pretty kind compared to the stuff we've seen on Chayka. But as he constantly points out, he was the ONLY person in media that even had a slight criticism on the hire. But then he also says they shouldn't have fired Shanahan and that he was such a great president etc etc. so it's just a weird contradiction considering that hiring process was entirely fireable in itself.

And then he got fired and no one wants to admit that Tre was a disaster. And he immediately got a job and will work in the NHL shortly.

Also still searching for the Tre versions of these:

Yeah, I don't think it's really debatable Treliving got way better treatment despite way worse results.
