The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Like many things can be true

Simmons could be an unprofessional hack
Digging into Chayka's past is completely fair
The Leafs could have been prepared in any manner whatsoever to actually talk about it.
This might be a nightmare hire
Its still a way better hire than Tre or anyone of that ilk, even if it's the basement of a data driven hire.

Cap is going up

Sure, but the salaries always stay fairly relative to each other. 9 millie would be crazy to give a 30 yr old with 3 seasons in the league, 1 of them as a #1. Raddysh is way more likely to be in the late bloomer Weegar/Forsling/Matheson salary tier with adjustment to the new cap environment than he is to be making Chychryn/Dobson money.
FA crop is terrible

It's actually not bad for RHD. Andersson, Carlson, & Trouba are all varying levels of desirable for a lot of teams looking for a top pairing RHD.

Alot of teams are and should be desperate

A bad team like the Leafs might need to really overpay.

A lot of teams don't have the amount of budget and cap space that you think. Most good teams are already well into the 85-90+ million dollar range of salary commitments for next season. Everyone always underestimates how much it costs just to keep your own RFA's and randos.

My one bit of inside info is that the Raddysh family had no interest in playing in Toronto back in ~2016 when Taylor got drafted. It's about a decade old information but take that Darren Dreger!

I know i want Raddysh well ahead of Rasmus and Trouba, and Carlson kinda feels like a contenders only dude

I mean, that's great, but again this is why I try to keep it objective and use the same guys who produced a highly accurate contract projection list last year. Could I see AFP under value Raddysh? Yeah sure. But by 4 fucking million a year? No. It's way more likely that someone spiked your cheese with the magic mushrooms again.
