Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

Both of the final 2 seasons here, he was below 50th percentile in 32kmh+ bursts. Sure you're not thinking about Brodie?
His last year was 4 games. Did you count that? Because prime Muzzin was a +++ skater. He wasn't overly skilled or anything else. He drove possession through his skating ability mostly.

Granted, yes he did fall off a cliff once his skating went to shit. Because that's all he had really.

I omitted that. The two years previous (31 & 32) are what I used.

I swear you and I are remembering two different players. I mean, 31 & 32 isn't old and he was already below 50th percentile in in bursts, that's usually not because they don't want to go fast. For comparison, at 31 Brodie was 83rd percentile, this year at 31 Mo was 90th percentile.

I still wouldn't call 2 years before his retirement prime Muzzin. His entire thing for his entire career was being able to quickly close gaps and being able to skate with the puck (his offensive metrics were always better than the defensive ones). Once he lost his skating ability his nerdies tumbled unfortunately.

He was an ugly choppy skater and maybe that's why one would think he was a poor skater, but I certainly wouldn't describe him as slow for most of his career. Maybe his ugly stride reduced his longevity or caused a lot of his injuries, but skating ability was one of the reasons he was a top pair d for most of his career.

Most really good skaters don't fall under 50th percentile at 31 though man. Brent Burns is a million years old, and was still 62nd percentile this season in bursts.

I understand, I just know what I watched. And his skating clearly fell off. I mean look at a couple of the scouting reports when the leafs first acquired him:

"He’s got mobility back there. I wouldn’t look at him as a big, slow type of guy. I think he’s got good mobility for a man who can turn both ways."

That they don’t know how well-rounded he is. How good of a skater he is. How strong he is. He’s a great defender."

“He moves the puck, he can join the play. He’s a true No. 2. He’s behind Drew Doughty so he doesn’t get a lot of the news, but at the same time he’s a solid No. 2.

“He’s a great skater. He’s so powerful the way he can move around the ice. And for a relatively big guy he’s mobile and agile."

Like skating was always a big part of his game. He was a bit of a rover back there at 5 on 5. Very aggressive pincher and often caught up ice (which was one of the knocks against him, but he sure drove offense well). Almost played like a fourth forward at times. He covered a LOT of ice.

I think you're misremembering who this player was once upon a time.

Also wait I just realized you referenced bursts. I'm not sure that is what I'm referring to anyway. He was obviously big and agile and mobile though.

I’m sorry I started this whole thing. I honestly think you never replaced his skill set back there, or even tried for that matter
