The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

kinda hoping there's no rielly trade now. i think he does probably want to move on but i really thought we'd do a better job with all that money we had bringing in some offensively skilled forward depth and i'm not sure i have faith that we'll be spending his cap hit on anything good/better now.

I hate the Bob signing most. I would have really just rather gone with the two kids and glass man. I hate even more that we traded him to a division rival that has their franchise goalie with two years left, just enough time to hand over the reigns.

Having a top 6 / bottom six divide is so dumb, because when you get injuries, you have a bunch of grinders now playing up in the lineup where they don't belong. Unless the plan is like:

Knies-Matthews-Grinder
McKenna-Tavares-Grinder
Nylander-Grinder-Cowen
Grindrrrrr x3

Which I also hate

Yeah, we're very fucked if Matthews/Tavares or both goes down. I mean, that's always going to hurt any team but I can't think of a worse set up for that scenario.

Roslovic is OK to me, just OK. Paul seems like he's in clear decline.

I was hoping a real nerd might be able to find more *value* which doesn't usually involve blowing your load on Day 1 of UFA

My review:

Everything before July 1st: smart, data driven. Can justify everything they did with cold hard date

July 1st: everything equally bad and equally non data centric

It's just such a waste of all that cap space as a big picture.

When you start to run some math on whether it would be a better team with Hildeby and Byram than Bob and the random bottom line guys who were signed... Especially where the Leafs are, I don't understand how the goaltending conundrum got resolved with "keep the oldest of the 3 goalies, and also add a guy who's older".

Byram what are you doing here.

But yeah, I agree, with the main sentiment - the whole Bob thing is still a bit nuts to me.

I hate that there's no upside to anyone they got. Best case Nick Paul is maybe a low end 3c if he somehow bounces back, which is rare for a guy his age that has been trending down for many years, coming off a season where he was a 4th liner.

Best case for everyone else is that they are legit 4th liners. And for Roslovic, we already know he's a flawed player, but I guess the upside for him is that he's friends with Matthews.

That's it. They didn't acquire anyone... After spending all that money.. that has any amount of upside that you think could significantly improve a roster. Like an Andrae, for example; there's some upside potential there that you can look at and say damn he might make this dcorps realgud if things go well for him. None of that. They're all maybe 4th liners, but also one small step down and they're not even nhlers.
