The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Why wasn't anyone complaining when we were pumped and incredibly optimistic and happy about what they did prior to July 1st? Can't have it both ways. We react to what we see, not dependent on what team we cheer for. I would have mocked every other team in the NHL if they had that July 1st.

My biggest concern is that bob sucks dick and they're too afraid to sit him because he demands to be played, like what happened in Florida last year.

Bob demands aside, hard not to show an abundance of patience towards your newly signed best goalie in the world.

Having said that, I have a hunch Bob will be quite good in year one

No one here is upset with Raddysh, we're all very pumped for McKenna, we're all excited for no Berube, we all love getting rid of Carlo, Benoit etc.

Some people don't believe in Bob at 3x7m and think 20m could've been spent better. That's all anyone's complaining about and I think it's totally fair.
I really can't remember the last time this board was happy with events of a July 1. It just different levels of complacency.

or two year celebration time and then add McDavid and Werenski.

We can't lose!

It’s not out of the question that this is the plan Chayka pitched his overlords… give me a few drafts to restock the pipeline and get everything ready for these two elite talents… in the meantime I will spend to the cap with guys that are tough to play against

I think having me re-litigate all the past deadlines is a waste of time - I've had ones I've hated and ones I've liked, and not always in step with the rest of the board.

I don't think we spent 20m wisely on Wednesday and you're free to debate me on that - so far you haven't really addressed what I'm actually complaining about, you've just pointed out all the things I'm happy about!

But then why overpay? Why not get more skill than grit? The strategy is fine, in fact the same one I’d roll out since I believe in McD 2028. But the player selection and deal making was still second rate.

I still think the better move if you absolutely refuse to go over 2 year term and believe you're out on Marchment/Jenner etc, is to have a little patience and find better value after July 1. I don't totally know why you need to hand Sissons 4m on Day 1.

He got what was available on July 1. Whatever skill was available was in a position to ask for more term. He paid grinders more AAV so he could keep the contracts short

He’s working on the plumbing. While the valuable finishes arrive later

In his mind Chayka thinks they added 3 elite talents (mckenna raddysh bob) and then filled in the bottom 6 with good tough defensive guys.

No big assets sacrificed and no prohibitive contracts given.

I do get it but see question marks all over that plan.

The old pricey goalie fixation doesn’t match basic nerdism, tho
Almost $11m on goaltending between the 2 for the next 3 years and it's nothing but a risky bet, with minimal upside. It's perplexing. Perhaps even more perplexing than his plug contracts.

i really think people need to reserve judgement on the $$ spent on Bob..ive been an advocate for years that our goaltending had been shit, with respect to Stolarz, whom i like but he wasnt the guy... Woll wasnt the guy... Freddy wasnt the guy etc etc...
we treated the puck like a fucking hand grenade in our own end all year... we have upgraded our possession in the d zone with showing carlo/benoit the door and bringing in Raddysh and Andrea (who i dont know much about but from reading here is an improvement in zone exits)... just that alone, having an improvement in that area is going to help immensely IMO... if improve our turnover rate in the d zone, that would be huge.. d zone turn overs is what is tattood in my brain from last season

Chayka doesn't have some super secret data that bob was actually good last year btw. He's just betting on a hall of famer bouncing back. It's a risk that may work out. But it's probably more likely that it doesn't, based on his downward trend, unplayable last season in a large sample, and general history of goalies his age.

But yeah, it's possible he reverts back to average, and that would be a huge win and crisis averted. But people are upset that the risk is needlessly large, I don't think anyone's under any impression that he'll suck for sure. They just feel it's a poor bet to make.

Okay but again, I already agree with all of this re: the D and getting rid of the slugs!!

I'm disappointed we spent so much of our space on low end forwards, that's it, that's all. I don't think there's much upside there. I think even one higher end player and I'd be more content!
