The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

I will say this one thing, not to put a damper on all the positives lately, but we have to see what Matty does from here on out.

Is he just Marner part deux, and stuck because he had more term left, and has similar bullshit crybaby nonsense that defines him, or does he step up from here and become a true captain, who is all in on the team, says he wants to be here for his career, signs the next extension without drama, takes his game up a notch in the playoffs, and starts to smile a bit when he's on the ice.

Because, not gonna lie, I have definite concerns about him after this past season and summer, and I really am going to be optimistic about him impressing us in every aspect of his role here now. I hope he doesn't let me down.

He hasn't been bad in the playoffs by any means, but just for once I'm dying to see him show that he has it in him to go on a 69-goal Auston Matthews-style heater for the duration of a playoff run. Especially if the team plays to his strengths in terms of their coaching & gameplay and gives him some more offensive support. That'd be the ticket to him truly becoming a legend here. At the end of the day, Doug Gilmour scoring at a 137 & 127 point pace in back-to-back deep playoff runs is why he's still beloved 30+ years later.

as for Hamilton now that i think about it seems pretty clear that his Yale MBA and PE background means he's here to refine the front office structure - both make it more efficient, eliminate some jobs/departments and maybe create some other different jobs/deparments. Basically to run the typical mba/PE value analysis and figure out which jobs are helping and which aren't. that kind of valuation sucks when the goal is profit, but if the goal is maximizing hockey returns, then it should be useful.

The idea that a guy with that background would just be a glorified executive assistant or PR guy or HR guy doesn't seem too plausible.

Basically seems like Chayka is surrounding himself with as many smart people as possible.

I had higher hopes of that before they hired Mehta. Fitzgerald was ready to dump him for salary relief if rumours were true, Mehta knows he's a good player (and that Nemec isn't), so will want value in return.

But Carlo is so much better and younger and just needs a change of scenery for his offensive game to explode, and if our arms are twisted all the way around, maybe we throw in Maccelli to get it done.

Like I said, before Mehta that had a chance. The only thing we can hope for there imo is that Mehta wants to put his stamp on the team and sees that cap space as a necessary tool to do it with. That he's identified some value plays elsewhere but needs to unlock Dougie to do it.

So not impossible but probably not likely. Raddysh+Dougie would have been a completely cromulent solution to the right side this summer.

I like Dougie but I don’t care all that much. I’d be just as happy getting Andersson and Raddysh for free. I don’t even really care about the overpay too much. Just get a couple of guys who can skate and shoot from back there. It’s about time.

the chances of us getting both top UFA Ds are slim. Even 1 would take a lot of work and a pretty intense bidding war.

We're not an unattractive destination for UFA right now but we're not the most attractive, either.

Also you have to be warry with adding multiple older dmen. Muzzin was 30 when the Leafs got him and he had 2 and 1/2 good seasons. Brodie was 30 and he had 2. Tanev was 34 and he had 1.

They have to try and find a way to get someone younger, otherwise they'll just have to keep rebuilding the D every 2 years.

true, but at the same time I keep seeing oldsters like Burns Carlson Karlsson Doughty performing for good playoffs teams in recent years.

yeah the UFA guys would fix the D, but the most temporarily, as pretty soon you're left with more aging declining big contracts.

the bidding will probably too high on Raddysh etc anyway

Agreed. Though I do think betting on Hamilton for his 33-34 seasons is probably pretty safe. Raddysh through 35 (6yr real) is riskier but can be Robidas'd on the backend if it needs to be.

The trap to watch out for there is that all of those guys were elite elite. That type of player tends to age more gracefully than others.
