The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

You have to remember, in their eyes "compete" = chasing the puck with their arm/legs moving real fast, and digging hard in the corners. They have no frame of reference for elite IQ players who are trying to be where the puck is going and not where it is.

Nylander, Panarin, Kucherov, etc, etc have all eaten miles of shit their entire careers for similar, he's trying to be where the puck is going, not where it is.

Whenever anyone asks a direct question about McKenna's willingness to play defence, back check, etc all of a sudden compete isn't the issue, he's a very willing defensive player, etc. Well then if you have a player who isn't lazy in the defensive end, and piles up mounds of points on the offensive end...compete isn't the issue, the analyzers ability to recognize what he's seeing is.

As far as the Athletic goes.

Pronman is to NHL as Bowden is to MLB.

At least Bowden used to be a terrible MLB GM though, so he brought in readers probably. No idea what the excuse for Pronman is though

Pavelski

Chayka is very likely far more interested in approach vs experience. If Pavelski is data forward, big on maximizing sports science for rest/recovery, etc, his lack of experience won't be an impediment.

Chayka appears to be building the type of organization I've been screaming for over the years. Everyone doesn't have to agree with each other on everything but the methods of analysis have to be more or less aligned organizationally
