2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Everyone come through last night's nastiness OK? We briefly lost power for about 10 minutes, my neighbors are on a different circuit and are still out, I hear a generator running. The lights at Creedmoor Rd. at the ramp onto westbound 540 are out as are the lights at Creedmoor Rd. and Stonehenge. In the news last night, they said the area at Leesville and 540 was pretty badly hit too.
No problems on New Bern Ave.

It sounded bad around Brier Creek. I saw one warning that said rotation was spotted near RDU. But we mostly got heavy rain. I don't see much wind damage.

We may be missing our jeffbear for a month or so as he mourns the death of Glen Hansard.

I am in fact mourning the loss of Glen Hansard, but I am back in town after my week and change in Canada and Alaska. I tried to watch the livestream of the public funeral services for Glen this morning but couldn’t get past the first musical tribute before I shut it down. I’ll revisit when I’m more able to process. Gone at 56 after a trad session in a pub. Too soon, for sure, but that’s not a terrible way for a modern troubadour to spend his last night.

If anybody’s up for it, you can watch Eddie Vedder do a quite moving rendition of Song of Good Hope on YouTube, I think. RTE is clipping stuff from the services on their socials. Vedder toured a lot with Glen during his ukulele phase and covered that song regularly. I’m honestly surprised he could get through it. They were close.

Hansard said the he and Veder became tight friends after Veder reached out when an audience member committed suicide by jumping off the stage roof and landed at Hansard’s feet. Hansard said that one act sent him in all sorts of ways and Veder just reached out and that connection was so powerful in getting him through that period.

Hansard was such a gifted songwriter.

Anybody interested in exploring Glen Hansard’s music, I do have one suggestion … whether it’s his work with his band The Frames, his work with Marketa Irglova in The Swell Season or his solo work, Glen’s whole thing works better live. There are a number of really strong recordings, but for an initial impression consider finding a live recording. There are a BUNCH to choose from.

Just saw where Peter Millar announced former Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey as a spokesman in what has to be the most obvious bit of corporate synergy ever. The ultimate white bread sports and leisure clothing line pairing up with the up with the ultimate white boy pro athlete.

And hey. No shade on McCaffrey or Peter Millar. The latter was founded by erstwhile NC State textiles guys, is still headquartered in Durham and is a NC corporate gem. The former is one of the better RBs in pro football. When he’s healthy. Which is rarely.

Hey … this thread has been running on fumes and I was on hold when I saw that announcement on an unsolicited email.

FYI, they are expected to move their headquarters to downtown Raleigh as part of a new development by Highwoods near Nash Square.

OK, here’s something more meaty …

I read Katie Strang’s most recent investigative piece in The Athletic over breakfast this morning and it’s a cracker. A lot of you subscribe, but anybody who doesn’t shouldn’t have too much trouble fishing for a gift link. The story of Michael Blatt’s failed bid to be GM of the Seahawks in the late 80s was a thing I kinda/sorta remembered but the rest of his story was 100% not anything I knew about. This thing is a wild ride and a great read, which includes a dude getting killed with a crossbow. Sort of.

"A playboy NFL agent was in line to run the Seahawks. Then came the crossbow killing"

I'll have headlines you'd never thought you'd read for $1000 Alex

There’s also a suspected link to a string of serial murders that kind of peters out. It’s a less an article and more of a roller coaster. One of those old wooden ones where you’re not sure how much damage the termites have done
