Habs Offer Sheet for Aho

$8.5M for 5 years seems to be right smack in the middle of what the Canes were rumored to be offering and what Aho was rumored to be asking. Can't see how this is anything other than an attempt to mess with the Canes' finances by the use of the signing bonus structure. This is not a good faith offer.

And in return, other than the stress it puts on Caniac Nation, I'd say sit on it for the full 7 days allowed to tie up $8.4 of Montreal's salary cap so they can't spend it elsewhere on Plan B.

Here is the breakdown per LeBrun

Breakdown of Aho offer sheet: $11.3M SB plus 700k salary in Year 1; $9.87M SB plus 700k salary in Year 2; $6.95 SB plus 750k salary in Year 3; $5.25 SB plus $750k in each of Year 4 and Year 5

The signing bonus is taxed differently in Quebec than salary. Salary gets the 51% tax and the signing bonus is at 15%, thus the structure.

Only thing is that the Canes want 7 years... If he hasn't signed then they could offer that to make it 7 years. Course Aho doesn't want 7. (Betting on himself)

Look ... Montreal just offered a deal that represents a compromise between Carolina and the player, but did so in such a way that the owner basically has to pay Aho out of his own pocket for two years. That's a bold move if you believe the owner doesn't have the money ... except that he does. Now the question is one of motivation and value. I think Carolina matches this, but not before they analyze their options. A trade with Montreal probably won't happen simply because Montreal won't give up anything that the Canes will want or need aside from maybe Suzuki ... but it would take a hell of a lot more than that to equate to the picks they'd give up automatically.

I think this gets matched.

Oh, you effing ABSOLUTELY do that. Screw them.

Well, and it's all lockout-proof that way too... most of the recent contracts are doing that, Quebec or not, although maybe not to this degree of basically making him a minimum NHL "salary" player for the whole thing.

(On top of the massive front-loading they're doing to test how deep TD's pockets are.)

LOL, that's exactly what they should do Bill!!! By next week at this time the Habs might still find Marko Dano or Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson available in free agency. :cheers2:

Maybe this isn't about the money but about the term. The Habs now have forced Aho to become a UFA earlier than the Canes would've liked. So now they play the long game and wait for free agency in 2025.

Or this is a favor to Dudley by Bergevin. Don't think these execs don't also help each other out. You will know if that is true if Carolina send s the habs a decent pick for a scrub before next draft.

BTW ... Waddell's first comment was that the Canes were surprised ... that it wasn't for more.

Nice.

So you're saying Karl Alzner is a Cane before long??? ;)

You'd be doing Habs fans a favor, we don't want to spend $9m on Anders Lee or $7m on Gardiner. I'm fine with the money being tied up. This deal may actually end up helping both fan bases.

Yeah ... I'm sure forcing the owner to dip into his wallet or his credit line with that BS bonus structure will go over well. Dundon is not only not broke like everybody in Canada seems to think. He's also not a nice man.

I just think that if the Habs REALLY wanted to screw the Canes that the offer would have been more.

As I said earlier, all this accomplished is putting an early end to negotiations. Yeah the Canes and Dundon are going to be unhappy with the structure and that salary and term, but now we don't have to worry about long and drawn out. You wait as long as possible to mess with the Habs and then match and smile big for the pictures knowing that Aho and his agent were willing to do this. These offer sheets are signed by the players so don't think that Aho is blameless in this...this is not all the Habs doing.

Again ... I doubt Dundon will walk away from this pleased, no matter that Waddell might. Nobody's going to ask Eric Tulsky because he'll just want the picks :0)
