2013-14 Premier League Thread

Jason Puncheon's missed penalty was one of the worst I've seen in awhile. WOW!

Most reviews dropped the "one of" and "in awhile". My favorite was "Puncheon endangers International Space Station".

Liverpool-Stoke was the only match I caught this weekend. I made the right choice. Holy cow, that was fun.

Aston Villa 1-2 Arsenal

Benteke gets his first goal since September 14, but it's not enough for Villa to come back from 2 goals down. Villa pressed for the last 20 or so minutes (all I saw, damn meetings) and Arsenal had all 11 on their side of midfield but they couldn't finish. Wilshere and Giroud scored a minute apart in the 1st half for Arsenal.

After 21 matches, Arsenal are still top of the table with 48 points, Man City has 47, Chelsea has 46. The bottom of the table is a mess. Cardiff, Sunderland and Crystal Palace are in the drop zone, West Ham just outside on goal differential. Hull City in 10th, so technically in the top half, but they're only 5 points clear of relegation.

I guess he didn't miss by that much on replay, but in my mind, the biggest miss ever (world stage had alot to do with it) was the legendary miss of Roberto Baggio for Italy in the 1994 World Cup finals (here in Pasadena, CA) in the penalty shoot out vs. Brazil.

That's the miss that, to me, is the "standard bearer" for penalty misses.

I don't think I'm going to even bother catching this one up on my DVR. After that Canes game last night and State's woeful performance on Saturday I'm pretty sure I can't take another limp noodle effort from one of my teams right now.

Villa fans: for this week-end, we are enemies. Not that I'm taking a team sitting 11th with a couple of helpful new signings in lightly. Glad that Sturrdige will get the start and that Allen and Sahko are back and ready to contribute, too. Hoping my boys can come out flying, grab an early, solid lead and see the game through.

Odd for me to hope that ManU goes into Stamford Bridge and wins, but such a win would move Reds that much closer to them.

And here's hoping that Clint Dempsey can find the back of the net a couple of times for Fulham vs. Arsenal.

If Man U goes into Stamford Bridge and wins, it will be TSO's first ever home loss in the league. Which I'm fine with. They'd also have to do it without RVP and Rooney. I'm also fine with Dempsey finding the back of the net, as long as Arsenal scores 1 more goal than Fulham.

Although there are still games to play, as of right now, 5 points separate 20th place from 10th, and 13 separate 10th from 8th. There's no better indicator of the impact in the disparity in wealth among clubs.

Liverpool 2-2 Aston Villa

Reds had to come back from 2 goals down after 36 minutes. Sturridge got one back just before the half and Gerrard scored on a penalty.

Crystal Palace climbs to 16th with the win, leaving West Ham, Sunderland and Cardiff in the drop zone. With Aston Villa getting a point, there is a 6 point spread from Villa in 10th and Cardiff in 20th. West Brom amd Swansea can join Villa in 10th with wins.

That was an inept performance at home. Full credit to Aston Villa for taking the game to Liverpool throughout, but the Reds can't be dropping points at home to mid-table teams. First Southampton and now Villa. Not happy.

Btw, Daniel Agger and John Flanagan (and Jose Enrique, for that matter) can't come back soon enough. Toure and Sissokho need to return to the bench.

Eto'o finished off a beautiful hat trick for Chelsea vs. MU while being practically lifted off the ground in a bearhug by Luis Valencia.

Swansea 1-3 Tottenham
Chelsea 3-1 Man U

So Spurs problems were AVB and the 4-2-3-1? Man U started like a house on fire and the Eto'o scored his first and it was like someone let the air out of the balloon.

Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea stay in the top 3. A win tomorrow at The Hawthorns moves Everton to 4th, one point up on Liverpool and Spurs. A West Brom win moves them from 14th to 10th, tied on points, ahead on goal differential with Aston Villa.

You shouldn't be. Villa was on as bad a run of form as they've had under Lambert and had looked completely clueless in that last 2-3 outings. Then they waltz into Anfieild and put out their best performance in 2 months. That just can't happen if you're Brendan Rogers.

West Brom 1-1 Everton

Toffees miss a chance to move to 4th in the table, giving up the tying goal in the 75th minute. They've only lost twice this season, best in the league but have 9 ties, including both matches with West Brom, Crystal Palace and Cardiff. That's a lot of points to leave on the pitch against bottom dwellers.

With the FA Cup ties last weekend, match week 23 is Tuesday/Wednesday:

Tuesday:
Man U v. Cardiff
Norwich v. Newcastle
Southampton v. Arsenal
Swansea v. Fulham
Crystal Palace v. Hull 3:00
Liverpool v. Everton 3:00 NBCSN

Wednesday:
Aston Villa v. West Brom
Chelsea v. West Ham
Sunderland v. Stoke
Tottenham v. Man City NBCSN

All the matches are at 2:45 unless noted. The other matches will be on Live Extra.

If I'm lucky, the Reds win while Arsenal and Man City drop points while away. Then there's ManU. Eager to see how Mata fits in there. But home to Cardiff isn't the toughest test so it should go well for them even without Mata mattering.

Today's results:
Man U 2-0 Cardiff
Norwich 0-0 Newcastle
Southampton 2-2 Arsenal
Swansea 2-0 Fulham
Crystal Palace 1-0 Hull
Liverpool 4-0 Everton

So Ed gets his wish, with Arsenal playing a listless first half, going ahead early in the 2nd and conceding the equalizer 2 minutes after going ahead. Liverpool gets a brace from Sturridge and goals from Gerrard and Suarez to easily win the Merseyside Derby at Anfield. Man U wins in Mata's debut, get a goal from RVP before being subbed out for Rooney in the 63rd minute. Crystal Palace moves up to 14th, Swansea to 10th.

Wins by either Man City or Chelsea move them top of the table. Wins by both push Arsenal down to 3rd.
