2014-15 Prospects and Cherkers Thread

Yes, Foegele was that player that we drafted out of a Canada prep-school that was sort of an outlier. He originally planned to play in the BCHL, but he decided to graduate from prep-school and go to UNH instead. OHL and USHL teams also drafted him in their 2014 entry drafts as a flier. His path as a kid from Canada with NHL asperations is a bit uncommon, usually these kids play major juniors in Canada, but he was a late bloomer from what I've read. But he apparently was very impressive for his prep school program and completely dominated his final year there and was regarded as a legit 3rd round guy with potentially great upside as a future power forward but with an unusual resume up to that point for an 18 year old kid from Canada.
Brind'Amour went the prep school route to the NHL. His folks wanted him to get an education, so he went to Notre a Dame in Saskatchewan on scholarship and then to MSU. If I recall the story, I think his dad told him if he were any good not to worry, the scouts would find him-- apparently they did.

That prep school has one heck of a hockey program. We've sent several kids from Raleigh to it.

Well I posted earlier that Lucas Wallmark was selected to play some games in the build up to the world championship later this spring. Despite being the youngest player of the squad he actually picked up the most points with 6 points in four games.

Fleury played last night and scored a beauty of a top-corner power play goal.

But was also injured and had to be helped off the ice with what looked like a lower-body concern (TWC had the jumbotron feed).

I haven't seen any updates about the injury this morning.

Kid looked very good in his opening pro game.

EDIT: it's at 1:29 in the highlight video.

No biggie, that just means they don't play in Charlotte's last couple of games. Pesce will be in Charlotte next year and Tirronen will be either in Charlotte or Florida depending on Altshuller's status and if we need 1 or 2 goalies in Charlotte. The ATOs were just a means to allow them to play a few games in Charlotte this year as their NHL entry level deals do not start until next season.

Was wondering if there are some rules for how long ATOs can be before they turn into a real contract and impact entry level status....don't know though. gotta believe that would be the reason for both of them

That's what I was thinking too but the article never explains why.

Canes CHL Major Juniors Prospect update --- Playoffs at of April 19th

Sergei Tolchinsky (OHL Sault Ste. Marie) 8 games 3 Goals 6 Assists

Tyler Ganly (OHL Sault Ste. Marie) 8 games 1 Goals 4 Assists

Sault Ste. Marie swept their 2nd round series and start what should be a high flying/high scoring 3rd round series with Erie this Thursday

Brent Pedersen (OHL Kitchener/Oshawa) 10 Games 0 Goals 2 Assists

Oshawa won their 2nd round series in 5 games. They play North Bay starting this Friday

Not that it really matters now that he is Edmonton bound....

Connor McDavid (OHL Erie) 9 Games 11 Goals 12 Assists

Erie swept their 2nd round series...next up is Tolchinsky and Ganly's St. Sault Marie team

As for our D prospects final numbers in Charlotte:

Roland McKeown 4 Games 0 Goals 1 Assist +3

Haydn Fleury - 1 Game 1 Goal 0 Assists -1

Brad Pesce - 4 Games 0 Goals 1 Assist +2

Josh Wesley - 1 Game 0 Goals 0 Assists -2

Charlotte's season is over.

So this week really its only our 3 remaining OHL prospects still playing hockey that counts. The IIHF World Championships with Justin Faulk, Elias Lindholm, Viktor Rask, and Anton Khudobin (and possibly Lucas Wallmark and Michal Jordan?) start on May 1st. Christer, did Wallmark get invited to the pre-tourney camp for Sweden? I saw Michael Smith report that Jordan was invited to the Czech pre-tourney camp.

Some numbers from Charlotte. Their final record was 31-38-6-1 for 69 points. They finished with the 5th worst record in the league, 13th in the Western Conference and 18 points out of the playoffs. They also had offensive problems, scoring the 2nd fewest goals in the league with 172 or 2.26 per game. Justin Shugg led the team in goals and points with 21-22-43. Trevor Carrick led with 25 assists. Drew MacIntyre played 51 games and had a 20-26-1 record with 2.84 GAA and .914 Save %. John Muse played 29 games and was 10-12-0-0 with a 2.68 GAA and .916 Save %.

Ya it's just hard to get excited about any potential Canes contribution coming up I-85 anytime soon. Maybe McGinn as a bottom 6 body... give PDG a couple years... dunno, I'm reaching. I have to laugh though, Patrick Brown who they thought was ready to start the season in Raleigh!, racked up 10 big ol' points in 60 games down there.... Boychuk lost cause (I know he was hurt, but...) Woods and Shugg may get cups of coffee up here but I'm not expecting much more.

We've already stripped Charlotte of any talent they might have that was anywhere near of age.

Rask was supposed to be their number one center this season, with Terry on his wing. We rushed Murphy again, instead of giving him a full season to dominate and learn systems at the AHL level. Heck, we even had Jordan up for an extended look.

That shallow depth thing...it shows.

Trevor Carrick responded offensively once we recalled Murphy. Carrick was one of the few offensively skill DMen we had down there for most of the 2nd half of the season. I don't think Carrick is on the cusp of being a top NHL defender, but I like his blend of offensive skill, height (he's 6'2", I can't say size until he cracks 200 pounds) and willingness to at least try to play physical. Considering right now our blueline for next year is filled with question marks, I don't think its a stretch that Carrick will at some point in time in the next couple of years be at a minimum part of the Charlotte depth rotation, if not a 3rd pair DMan for us. He certainly can't ask for a better situation in terms of there being an opportunity.

Yes Wallmark played two Euro Hockey Tour games vs the Czechs this weekend. In the first game he centered the second line and in the second game he centered the first line. He got one assist in those games.
Michal Jordan played in those games as you say. He was playing on the third respectivley fourth defensive pairing. No points scored for him.
