2016 NHL Free Agency Thread

I hope you guys get a stud free agent. Makes me moving to Carolina and getting season tickets more bearable :)

I would think you would not call a PC just to announce a re-signing of a current player. Word may leak out tonight or early tomorrow if it's a big name.

Not just a roster space though andyt, a roster space occupied by a guy coming off a major knee injury getting paid $3 million. I know there are other ways to to avoid exposing Pesce because there is no one else to expose but this also removes an uncertainty from the lineup AND frees up some cash this year AND potentially opens up a spot in the top 6 to get a player to be determined to be expansion draft eligible. The guy we put in the top 6 might also be better than a gimpy Wiz so its potentially a lineup improvement as well.

So yeah, maybe not 100% about the expansion draft but should we get a dman under contract for 2 seasons after making this move I think its clear that was part of the thinking in this buyout.

But if we were already below the floor, we could have re-signed Murphy to a 2 year deal anyway. That's the part that doesn't make sense. Only if we're going to overpay for a guy to expose and it was budget related does it make sense. Maybe we'll see tomorrow.

Lots of buyouts today. Dennis Seidenberg, Mason Raymond, Brad Stuart, Fedor Tyutin, Jared Boll, Lauri Korpikoski, Matt Greene, Eric Nystrom, Barret Jackman, RJ Umberger, Matt Carle, Jared Cowen, Chris Higgins.

Bob McKenzie tweeted that Jared Cowen was not bought out and may be the subject of a grievance filed by the NHLPA. He was injured when traded to the Leafs and never played for them.

Bob McKenzie said:
When Cowen arrived from OTT in trade, he was shut down from active duty due to hip-related issues. So, for now, no buyout on Cowen.

Bob McKenzie said:
It's believed NHLPA is now involved. This may well be subject of grievance arbitration but details scarce as both sides refuse to comment.

So, Francis has a news conference scheduled for 3 pm tomorrow. And I'm guessing he's not just dragging everyone in to wish them Happy Canada Day.

We're also still short of not only the cap floor (perhaps, Rask being a bit of an unknown), but also still well short of normal team salary budget. Many millions short.

Therefore, my hope is that we are part of some team's move for one of the high-priced free agents, by providing cap room for picks and futures (no salary back, please).

Incoming talent!

Francis has made it known he wants another top 6 forward so I would expect the press conference tomorrow is either to announce a significant signing or to discuss the acquisition of a player via trade. The Wiz news is not really that much of a surprise, you can find a veteran 6th defenseman easily off the UFA pile.

... or because RF knows everyone will be asking why we didn't do anything yet, so go ahead and answer everyone at the same time. :)

You also need the lineup spot though. Why pay Wiz $3 million this year if you need Murphy to play 35 games or someone else to play enough games to fit the Dman expansion draft requirements? I'm not saying the Canes needed to free up cap room or salary to do something else, I'm saying they didn't want to pay Wiz to be a 7th Dman (if he is even capable at this stage of being a 7th dman). I'm thinking the Canes want someone else in the top 6 for whatever reason, one of them possibly being the expansion draft angle. So why not free up the cash this year, and save the million bucks overall? Not because we NEED to do that but rather because we don't see value in having Wiz this coming season clogging up a roster spot at $3 million.

Wiz was also signed long before the Canes knew what they would get from Hanafin, Pesce and Slavin on the back end. $3 million for a 6th or 7th defenseman is not a luxury the Canes can afford. Carrick deserves a shot at that 6th or 7th slot this year. I hope Murphy is not an option.

you cannot buyout an injured player so I assume Wiz must have passed a physical for the buyout. these days an ACL tear does not end most careers.

Sure Wiz is healthy enough to skate and play hockey but he wasn't a burner to begin with. Wiz was medically cleared before the end of last season.

Fancy stats on him showed a slight decline on the defensive side in the previous season, although the offense remained strong.

Also just might be things have changed in the D ranks and his intended mentoring role not needed or about to be done a different way.

Plus, he's been on the shelf for a season. And we do have a lot of youth to be served.
