2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

I thought Tampa had some questionable garbage on full display last night...the cross check by Goodrow on Nelson as soon as the guy returns from the dirty hit that KIllorn layed on him seemed pretty targeted and intentional and Trotz thought the same.

I loved the way Matt Martin played the game last night, that's the type of player the Canes could use...he does not get stupid with his role, but he certainly makes the other team accountable and he stands up for his teammates at every turn and he can play a regular shift in the bottom six and contribute well.

Had Nelson done something to aggravate them? It sure seemed like they were targeting him... hard.
Meh ... Martin was chucking his body around in the direction of every skilled Bolt he could find, so I think it was just tit for tat. Nelson, being easier to catch than say Barzal, took the brunt of it.

Take a cruise through some the expanded stats guys' work. Couturier SHOULD walk off with the Selke by a mile and a half, but ... yeah. Maybe my issues with the NHL awards is less about the shabby criterium and more about the idiots they let vote.

Don’t know if it was by a mile and a half, but Couturier won the Selke.

OK, it was pretty close to a mile and a half. Couturier with 117 1st place votes and 1,424 points. Bergeron with 21 1st place votes and 884 points.

Jorday Staal was 14th, Teravainen was 29th, Aho was 30th.

Killorn was suspended for 1 game.
Seems a bit high in comparison to Ritchie's board against Gourde. (He didn't even get a Game Misconduct) and to be fair I have no problem with this getting a game. I have issues with Ritchie not getting anything

Some Hurricanes alumni news. Jason Karmanos has been named GM of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. JD Forrest was promoted from assistant to head coach. Forrest was drafted by the Canes in 2000 but never signed. After 4 years at Boston College, he played 2 years in Finland before returning to the US for the 2007-08 season. He played 12 games for the Everglades, 19 games for the River Rats and also played for Elmira in the ECHL and Worcester in the AHL before returning to Europe.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL at Draisaitl getting ANY votes for the Calder. Was that voter drunk? Protesting? WHAT?

Scratch Robin Lehner from your goalie wishlist. Vegas will sign him to a 5 year/$25 million contract after the playoffs are over.

Yup ... those were the rumors a couple of days ago. That puts Fleury firmly in play, should somebody want to try and make room for his bloated contract. It also puts Vegas just under their projected cap space (or slightly over, depending on how you calculate) ... but they're pretty well stocked for next year already. Only a couple of forwards to deal with, really. In case anyone is wondering, the Pens could clear enough room for Fleury if they ditched both of their current keepers (both RFAs) and off-loaded one other contract. Not sayin' it makes sense, but you know full well people are going to talk about it either way.

Oh, also ... apparently Lehner followed up with a statement pumping the brakes on this. It's been pretty widely rumored to be coming though, so ... we'll see.

That fits the conversation after the Lady Byng finalists came out. Lots of the guys who picked Slavin first were confused as to how he didn't even make the top 3. To have 92 voters not even list Slavin at all shows how way too many voters don't even look at Dmen for the Lady Byng. Slavin legit deserved the award.

Pittsburgh and Minnesota made a trade. Nick Bjugstad to the Wild for a conditional 7th rounder. Pens also retain half of Bjugstad’s salary. The conditions on the pick are if Bjugstad plays 70 games or has 35 points. He’s a UFA after the 2020-21 season.

Factoring in the February trade, this is where it it all shakes out between the teams.

Pens get Jason Zucker and a conditional 7th round pick

Wild get Bjugstad, Alex Galchenyuk (who is a pending UFA), dman Calen Addison (who will be a first year pro) and the Pens 2021 1st round pick. Pens also retain half of Bjugstad’s salary.

Yeah ... although saying someone deserves the Lady Byng is probably pushing it when the award has such an amorphous history in terms of a functional definition. There's clearly a movement among the younger generation of hockey writers to break some of the old tropes for these awards, and we're seeing them start to vote for defensemen for the Lady Byng and wingers (and purely defensive forwards who don't really score much) for the Selke like it's no big deal. Over time the dinosaurs in the PHWA will fade away and maybe these awards will start to actually mean something.

The Islanders sure found a well of team backbone last night ... taking Game 3 and playing an emphatic game. Good on 'em.

Big game in the West tonight, as Vegas certainly doesn't want to go down 3-1 in their series with Dallas.

Lehner over Fleury is a wise choice for Vegas moving forward. Interesting to watch what they do with Fleury and that contract of his now.

Khudobin made 32 saves, Jamie Benn scored the winner with less than a minute to go in the 2nd and Dallas can put Vegas out of their misery on Monday night.
