2019 Carolina Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Season tix holder line for equipment sale this morning was ridiculous. Glad to see so many season tix holders out early this morning but I'll eat breakfast instead of shopping for smelly gloves.

The appeal of that used equipment sale is something I've never understood ... but carry on.

I can understand the sticks. They had the Whalers Darling set (barely used) available still at 10am for $3 grand. Got my daughter a black and grey Helvig practice jersey for $50. And the gloves really do stink something awful!

My daughter’s equipment has been sitting unused in the eave at our house for 11 years. The gloves are the only piece of equipment she didn’t replace in the 5 years she played. I’m afraid to open the bag for fear of unleashing a smell so vile, my neighbors will force me to move.

Waddell confirms (Summerfest State of the Canes interview): still talking to Mrazek daily, if not hourly. DeHaan trade was really tough for him to make, but decided to keep the other 4 D (implied no Faulk, Pesce, Hamilton trade coming) and 4+ mil for 5th D too much and they wanted to have plenty of room in case they need to match Aho offer sheet. Aho not signed yet bc Aho's agent doesn't want to sign first out of the top RFA group.

Last year at the equipment sale I got $950 pair of Skinner's skates, barely used, for $300. First good pair I've ever bought. Usually I'm picking up the bargain basement pair on clearance somewhere for 50.... 3 pair of gloves barely used for 40 each. Pro stock sticks for 80, got another today. Plenty of good reasons to hit the equipment sale for those who still knock the puck around a bit.

Waddell also made it pretty clear that Mclhinney is 100% gone for sure.

I'm not fully understanding the 'we were worried about the cap' claims. But I suppose if you map it out we could be find ourselves sitting around $76-79 million after Darling is bought out, Aho and some of our other RFAs are signed and we have a goalie.

Ya I didn't check his math but for those not here, he said that after they figured out how much everyone might be going to cost to sign, it came to 81 mil, so they wanted some space to make sure on Aho. I suppose we can consider DeHaan as our cap casualty when the cap came in a couple mil lower than expected, on top of the 3rd pairing expense reasons.

Thoughts on Waddell's comments:

I've done some cap math and he's not BS-ing anybody. If you include a a couple of million for Williams or a replacement and a couple million for a Ferland replacement, add in the RFAs that we HAVE to sign, add in buyout cap hits and save $4-6 million for total goaltender pay ... you could easily get to the $80 mil neighborhood. Aho alone is going to chew up around 40-45% of Carolina's available cap space.

So yeah, he's got to be careful about over-paying Mrazek or anybody else for that matter, especially on terms that stretch past 2 years. Aho is priority 1. He's your best player and your franchise foundation for at least the next 5 years. We need a starter in net, but have a solid enough homegrown option down the road in Ned if we play his development right. So this is tricky business. You don't want to over-commit now and take away your room to sign Svech to a long term deal in 2 years because he looks for all the world like franchise player number 2. People acting like the Canes have all the room in the world to wheel and deal right now are kidding themselves.

I might rather have a dead possum in my attic eaves than an 11-year brewing mass of used hockey gear.

I snagged an almost new set of Warrior gloves for cheap today, next to no stink and the palms were about as new as you get for used. The appeal is in the prices, $40 for like new beats the $150 price tag on a pro set. Some of the used skates I browsed were $200 but retail new at $500 to $800.

This is the last day to purge Scott Darling from our roster. The fact we have waited this long likely means that Waddell is trying like heck to find someone willing to take another asset with Darling to save us the buyout cash and cap hit. We will find out the final results soon.

I figured it would have gotten done 30 seconds after they signed Ned. The window closes at 5:00, he’ll probably do it at 4:59.

In theory if we take someone to arbitration that is another opportunity, but I highly doubt the Canes have any plans for that. I wonder what the ask is from a team like Ottawa. A 2nd round pick? A player like Gauthier?

There was speculation, wild as it was, we were trying to off load Darling to Ottawa who isn't at the cap floor yet. I see that Ottawa is taking on Zaitsev from Toronto in exchange for Ceci-- that does not seem like a good move for anyone but Toronto. It's time Ottawa gets a good owner...

Yeah ... one note on that. Ceci may be the only remaining defenseman on Ottawa's roster that actually belongs in the NHL, but that doesn't mean he's actually any good. By all accounts, and I'll confess to watching the Sens as little as humanly possible last season, Ceci was pretty terrible for them last season. There's a trap here ... kind of like how people who don't really watch Carolina play fall into the trap of thinking Faulk is a lot better than he actually is. Zeitzev is stupidly expensive for what he does, but he's not a horrible player. Ottawa might actually get better in that scenario, or at least not get worse.

Still ... Ottawa's ownership is nuts. No arguing that.

I believe the issue is Reimer's ~$2.3M bonus due in 2020. Although Reimer is owed less money than Darling, I think the buyout actually costs more (since you have to pay 100% of the bonuses in a buyout, compared to only 2/3s of the remaining salary). So from Florida's perspective, they save a little cash on the buyout and pick up a 6th round pick.

Pierre LeBrun:
According to sources, Carolina got calls from three different teams today on Sebastian Aho, hinting at an offer sheet. The 'Canes told them they would match any offer sheet. Carolina did tell them they would entertain trade conversation. Believe that Habs are among three teams who called.

OK, fine, I'm just going to have an upset stomach until this is over.

But if 4 1sts is not enough and we would match, what would possibly be offered and accepted in trade?

Entertaining trade offers is NOT the same thing as actively seeking to trade the player. Everybody needs to take some Pepto and chill out.

Not entertaining trade offers is front office malpractice. Always answer the phone. You never know when Paul Fenton will be on the other end.
