2019 Carolina Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Hope McGuinn's arbitration doesn't go the distance and it gets settled without all the nastiness that can come out of these things.

Turns out a lot of guys who go through arbitration are traded not long after. Probably because the team is not happy with the pay awarded.

By the way, capfriendly.com had the exact minimum AAV amount for the arbitration buyouts.

https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-faq

$3,455,438 for 2019 offseason

So even if Reimer wasn't already ineligible for the arbitration buyout period because he wasn't on our roster at the last trade deadline, his AAV is too low to be eligible for buyout anyway.

Canes sign wing Max McCormick to a 1 year/2 way deal. He gets $700k/$100k with a $150k guarantee. Originally drafted by Ottawa, he played with Dzingel at Ohio St. (and was drafted 1 round earlier in the 2011 draft) and played part of last season with the Colorado Eagles in the AHL where one of his teammates was David Warsofsky, brother of Charlotte coach Ryan. He’s played 71 NHL games, all with Ottawa, and has 6g, 4a.

Looks like Waddle didn't want to shake gov's hand.

"Let me lean way on over here if I have to do this."

Catching up after being gone 2 solid weeks is ... fun.

Dzingle, McGinn, Francis, misc depth signings ... busy, busy, busy.

Thoughts:

Dzingle ... the Canes over-paid but he's useful and at least they didn't pay Day 1 prices. I think the best thing about Dzingle is that he's one of those guys who has had to fight for his due for his entire career. He's a guy who plays with a chip on his shoulder, and that should fit in perfectly here. I also suspect he's got another production gear to be hit and that Carolina's system offers him a decent chance of getting there. We'll see how it goes, but this is not the kind of player who under-performs for long. Pretty low risk for a UFA.

McGinn ... ugh. They NEED him for the versatility, but won't be happy with the money. I suspect he'll end up getting traded before that deal is finished, but MAYBE he can find some puck luck and score his way into sticking around.

Depth moves ... pretty clear that Carolina's scouting department has completely changed under Rick Dudley. Yeah, they still go for value, but now they tend to fill specific slots in terms of the various players' skill sets. I like the change. In the past they were so focused on versatility and upside that a lot of times the prospect and depth pools ended up with too many similar players, and mostly guys without any specialty skills. I like the change.

Francis ... good luck and God bless, but I think Ronnie is a bad fit for an expansion team GM. He'd be really, really good in a place like Philly, Pittsburgh or Toronto where the player acquisition stuff gets done by committee with input from ownership. As we all saw all too clearly here, Francis' thoughtful cautious nature tends to get him locked into only long term thinking even when short term needs are screaming for help. The expansion scenario plays to his strengths early on, but I think you've got to be ready to flip the switch to aggressive mode once you start to run out of runway in terms of time ... and if Ronnie has that switch, nobody's ever actually seen it up until now. Again though, I absolutely wish him the best. If all you need is a guy to build a farm system, he's clearly got that part nailed.

One other thing ... I hope like heck that Dundon has Eric Tulsky nailed to his desk chair with one heck of a combo of contract and commitment. I feel like Tulsky and the analytics department has really been the key element in the front office since Dundon took over. He buys in to that aspect like maybe no other owner in the league outside of Toronto. I can 100% guarantee that Francis will make a run at bringing Tulsky into the mix in Seattle eventually, even though I know that they already brought in an analytics guru before they even hired a GM. Let's hope Carolina can cut that off at the pass.

One thing I've been reading and hearing all offseason that I agree with. Svech is going to be a superstar.

The Athletic had an article a few days ago that had Svech as a top breakout candidate with analytics that showed he already was one of the most effective 5v5 players in the league...at 18 years old.

Aho's potential after his rookie season was exciting. Svech has the potential to take that to the same level (or higher).

Svech has the most well rounded set of offensive skills I've ever seen in a rookie in this organization. The only guy who even came close was Eric Staal and honestly, it's not that close. And the growth in his defensive responsibility over the course of the season was also truly impressive. He went from clueless to competent in the course of about 50 games or so.

The eye test is already good on him, but the analytics they presented confirmed what we are seeing.

Coupled with his thirst to get better, his work ethic, and his sponge-like absorption of all Brind'Amour and others have to offer had me believing early that we have an incredible #1OA-like player on our hands.

He's going to be great. He and Aho together...*kiss of the fingers*...magnifique!

We got lucky (for once).

Just needs to develop a wicked right cross for one ovenchicken.

“Andrei Svechnikov has a good sense of humor. In talking about offseason training he mentioned he took boxing lessons last summer, then laughed when told he should ask for his money back.”

I'm gonna guess he'll never get even half a shot at getting even with Ovi, who will all but certainly go back to avoiding fights like the plague like he did for the previous 7 or 8 years.

Agree. We didn't draft Svech to be a fighter. Just keep learning and scoring goals (especially against the Caps) - that's the best way to get your revenge.

I think you can pencil in Svech for a 30 goal campaign this year and several 40 goal seasons after that with his size and skill set. I'm still intrigued what Svech can really do once paired with a couple true offensive guys that can feed him the puck. I know Suzuki is at least two years away but that's the type of true play making skill set set up guy that could be magical paired with a goal scoring guy like Svech, or perhaps Necas as well if things play out the way we all hope!

Svech's assist totals would have been much higher last season if his creative/perfect passes were not being flubbed up by the likes of Martinook and Wallmark for much of the season. Svech looks like a highly capable sniper, but he made some unbelievable high end passes as well last season only to watch them not result in goals.
