2019 NHL Entry Draft

When will anyone address the boogeyman...USNTDP is much better funded & far superior in recruitment & development techniques relative to QMJHL? Crosby’s & Lafreniere’s will come along every once in a while, but the league doesn’t produce quantity of high end talent anymore in a global competitive landscape.

Maybe it’s time Gilles Courteau brings it up with the franchise owners....who BTW are becoming represented more & more by former players who played their entire pro careers everywhere else but Quebec, just sayin...

What are you talking about?

Everybody who follows the inter-workings on Junior hockey knows this. It isn't a secret, it isn't a an unwritten rule. Higher-ups in hockey have openly talked about it. Bill Daly was being interviewed on day 2 of the draft and he talked about the large contributions that the NHL made to the US programs 12 years ago.

Money is one of the many, many reasons Quebec is behind to the point that the USHL is coming close to surpassing them. The USHL will be the third best North American league in a decade.

There is no boogeyman. There is no big bad monster hiding under the bed waiting for the kid to close the lights. There's a hungry tiger in the living room in front of everybody who chooses to look at it.

Also, the problem goes much further beyond Gilles Courteau. There isn't much he can do to help solve the problem.

How many Q guys were drafted this year, overall and in the top 5 rounds. Finland (with a smaller population base) seems to be catching up faster than I thought.

You are missing the point. Not a single French media is saying we should take a player from the Q if others are better. Not a single French media said KK wasn't a great pick. Not a single one is saying Caulfield is not a great pick and none of them are suggesting that a player in the Q should have been drafted before these guys.

The issue with the draft, the Habs and the Q is the following: When you are in the later rounds, where you clearly don't have a lot of scouting reports on players, if you are going to take a coin toss choice, why not look for a similar talented player in the Q.

The Q is in the Habs backyard. They should be the organization that knows that league more than any other. They should be able to identify projects or potential players that have a good chance to become good hockey players VS the others.

When you are drafting a midget AAA players, or a High school player who have about 0.0001% of ever making it in the NHL, don't tell me there wasn't a player in the Q that had better chances to translate into an NHLer that could have been taken instead.

Habs themselves are setting this situation because they keep saying, and Molson confirmed it himself, at equal talent, they will pick the player from the Q. I'm sorry but we drafted 1 or 2 Q players in our last 34 selections and I'm sure some Q player taken by other teams will have better shot than some players we selected ourselves.

We can go into each draft and identify Q players the Habs passed over for a US or Euro players that ended up being better. You are going to say this is what the draft is about and everyone makes mistakes and I entirely agree but we go back to what I said earlier, the Habs should know the Q the most than any other teams in the NHL. We should NOT be dropping the ball of these players. We have no excuses.

Since Timmins came on board, there is a clear direction, favouritism away from the Q (Or if you can't read definition like GGpx, call him xenophobe against French players) which goes against what the organization is saying. They should stop the hypocrisy and just say they don't favour the Q, they don't scout it as much as other leagues and that it. At least, it would have the merits of being honest.

That is not the elephant in the room. The biggest reasons they are drafting in the US is that they have 4 years to sign them to pro contract while it’s 2 years for the CHL. Huge advantage for US prospects. Give you more time to evaluate the progression of a player before signing them.

This is nothing the Q can do unless the CHL wakes up.
USNTDP has nothing to do with NCAA - 4-years is for college....

The Francophone media you referenced earlier either don’t want to be forthright/ forthcoming or have their heads buried in the sand....seems to be a secret to them I’d say

I think the Laval Rocket have a nice representation of Quebec players , they had at least 10 Quebec players on that roster last year. so its not like they are trying to develop some home grown talent.
