2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

They're not my team, but will Hubert Davis be back next season? The injury issues were real, but his teams mostly don't make good decisions in the clutch. And losing a 19 point lead....

I’ve covered that team for 15 years and Hubert Davis is in way over his head. The only reason he won what he has is because of the talent that they get. He needs to be fired, but they won’t fire him because of who he is. Maybe they can convince him to step away. the only advantage is the new Athletic Director taking over after Bubba leaves next year has no big Carolina connections and he may not feel as strong about Hubert as Bubba does. Fans are hopeful Newmark won’t be afraid to make a change. Newmark grew up in Chapel Hill and has strong ties, but he isn’t all about Carolina ‘family’ like others have been. He won’t be afraid to look outside the program.

You're closer to the situation than I am, but I'm not sure about that. When they extended his contract through 2030, very flexible buyout provisions were included. The buyout if it happened now would be $5 million, which is low by Power Four conference standards these days.
 
Personally, I also think Hubert is way over his head tactically. I agree with Kevin that it’s going to take the new AD stepping up big to make that change though. Bubba ain’t firing him unless he starts to get huge pressure from the money guys.
 
The more I think about it and talk to people, I think there is a decent chance it happens. With them getting ready to raise money for a new arena they have to show they are committed to getting back to pre-Hubert Carolina. No one is excited to plop money down on a Davis coached team. They gave him ample time and plenty of re$ource$ and he did just Ok. He won a lot of games..but was not consistent enough and lost too many games they should have won. Two early dismissal’s from the tournament might be the nail in the coffin. Time to move on.

Yeah, they gave him more operating budget and hired a proper GM this season and got the same results as last year more or less. The timing will be the deciding factor for the big donors, I think.

Well, to give Hubert a little credit, the biggest difference is being without one of the best players in the entire country for the last month + of the season. I feel confident to say that if Caleb Wilson was playing, they wouldn’t have lost that game last night or several of the games they lost at the end of the season. Not only is he a great player he truly is a great teammate. He’s one of the best kids I’ve seen in a while. Good grounded family too. But, as a coach, you have to find a way to carry on and blowing a 18 point lead with 12 to play does not inspire confidence in your coaching ability at that level

Kinda related….I was watching a food show today and there was this chef in Brooklyn that has a NC bbq place. He’s a New Yorker that fell in love with NC cue on a trip and opened a spot in Brooklyn. He makes this Mac and cheese with some sort of sweet potato concoction where he puts the sweet potato puree on the top part of a waffle iron and Mac and cheese on the bottom then makes this Frankenstein Mac and cheese to go with the bbq. Apparently it’s really good 🤷🏻‍♂️
 
Hubert’s last press conference after that loss was about as bad as you can get…he looked like dead man walking then!

Yep. He froze in the second half and it carried over into the press conference. That’s when the powers that be realized he was not it. They couldn’t believe the ‘coaching’ job he did in the 2nd half of that game. Even without Wilson they should have won that game.

They gave him a chance to resign and when he decided yesterday he was not going to Bubba and Newmark fired him.
