2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

I’m about to give up on sources. I know they are legit but honestly, candidates and players lie to them these days too. It’s nothing like it used to be. It’s crazy. If I didn’t work in the industry I’d have stopped following this circus years ago. It’s so slimy
Unless your source is the actual coach himself, yeah … it’s chaos out there. I know a guy who used to do contract work for an agent who repped several fairly high profile coaches and he always says a lot of those clowns change their minds like they change their socks. They’d be “all in for life” at a school one day and then be on the phone about seeing if they could get in on some other job two weeks later.

Our sources are the AD office and BOT/BOG folks who are involved. Plus the usual national guys were have like other ACC/SEC head coaches. Problem is they are good intentioned with their info but these coaches and their agents lie right to their faces in negotiations. It’s disgusting. The first time I remember it getting like this is when Beamer told Baddour he was on a flight down to sign a contract and then ghosted them until he signed anew deal with Tech 2 hours later. Coining the phrase we got ‘Beamered’. It’s only gotten worse since then

Even I think Beamer did Carolina wrong. Coaches, man.

Speaking of which, I saw where May officially backed out of consideration for the UNC job which kind of leaves them either waiting for Donovan or moving to fallback options. And there’s been a weirdly small amount on chatter about Plan B guys. At this point, with the portal opening so soon, if they were ever willing to bite the bullet to wait for Donovan then this seems like the time to do it. This window is going to be weird for them either way.

The list I have right now is Donovan, Byington still in mix even though he signed extension (buyout is “only” 10 mill), McCollum, Drew and McCasland. Also supposedly someone else but they couldn’t/wouldn’t tell us who.

I think Byington would be a good fit. Drew … woo boy, I dunno. Maybe, if they think that Baylor’s decline is due to reduced resources. At least he’d be a style fit and he’s certainly got a high end resume. Those other guys all seem like bad fits. IMO McCollum is the best pure coach on that list but he’s a classic Midwest grinder and I can’t see Tar Heel fans warming to that kind of ball. The NandO is reporting that former Nuggets and Kings coach Michael Malone is a viable option. He’s out of work and hasn’t worked in college in forever. Not so sure about that one.

OK … NBA guy, didn’t have to wait. Not Donovan’s pedigree for sure, but a capable ball-knower. Going to be a learning curve figuring out the college game though. My guy at Furman told me that Malone had been pursuing the job ever since it opened and that most people in college sports thought it was a long shot because everybody assumed that it was Lloyd’s job if he wanted it.

And there was the name they wouldn’t give us lol.

TBF, it's been a learning curve for every coach since NIL and the portal were unleashed.
Yeah, absolutely. My UNC friends are playing up Malone’s connections to Doncic’s agent, who also reps a lot of Euro players in college, including a couple of Illinois guys. We’ll only know over time and some college coaches operate more like NBA coaches these days with their GMs doing most of the recruiting and benefit allocation. He won a bunch of games and a trophy with the Nuggets and it seemed at the time like he lost a power struggle with his GM when he was fired. It’s outside the box, for sure.

Sounds like they couldn’t discuss the name because there were active negotiations going on … given the timing. Fair enough. Having been through a couple of these things at State where the media seems to know every single thing happening with the search as it happens, it’s WAY better to keep these things schtum.

He’s been around the program a lot the last year with his daughter on UNC’s volleyball team. I saw him in the tunnel with George Karl and Larry Brown. Never thought he’d Coach there. He was linked to several nba jobs for the coming season. He sat out this year to collect his buyout. Windhorst says he was going to be offered the pelicans job but decided UNC. I wouldn’t want to Coach the pelicans either 🤣. Time will tell if he can make it work

This hire at UNC is kind of the ultimate “wait and see” hire. There’s no way to predict how Malone is going to do based on any previous data, regardless of who’s telling anyone how great or awful it’s going to be. To me, that’s the real puzzle of the whole thing. Carolina, IMO, absolutely should be in the position in men’s basketball to hire as close to a sure thing as you can get.

Yep. All the NBA types seem to like the hire. But it’s just too hard to tell how he will adapt to college. However, college ball is more like the nba now then it’s ever been, so he might not have to adapt too much. It will be key for him to bring in….or keep someone on staff with that experience. Keeping a Sean may or Brad Frederick from the current staff or if he wants fresh blood but a Carolina guy we’ve heard Stackhouse’s name thrown around. He was great in the G Lesgue and won a SEC Coach of the year at Vandy until he then struggled. Might be a spot for him to get back in the sideline. He still owns a house in the governors club.

Yeah, I think if Malone is gonna work, he’s going to need to be free to do his own thing without the baggage of the old ways. Nothing against Stack personally, but that sounds a lot like the “Carolina Way” stuff and this is a chance for them to break that cycle and move into a more modern era with a more modern approach. Just my take. After where State and Carolina have been these past couple of years, I’m of the opinion that State needs to lean into their tradition and Carolina needs to lean away from theirs.

time will tell. He’ll probably keep Sullivan because they worked together a lot in the nba. Pat was an assistant and also a scout for him. Sean might stay if. He doesn’t go to Charlotte with Wes miller. As long as he gets a competent veteran college assistant to help navigate his first few years. The guy can coach and has tons of euro connections as well. Will it translate to this version of college bball. We will see. Will be interesting to watch up close

Looks like he is getting Arkansas Asst Chuck Martin on staff. We interviewed him ‘off the record’ for a piece tonight but it’s not official because he hasn’t told Calipari yet lol

Exactly the kind of guy an NBA coach needs to help with his transition to college. College lifer with head coaching experience who’s been a recruiting coordinator at high level programs. Also, he’s worked with some, umm … high strung guys in the past. Cal will probably be ticked off, but hey … that’s not a negative in the grand scheme. Pick one of the current guys for continuity and then find a couple of other guys with wider experience and you’re set. No rush though. Malone needed a guy who knows the recruitment/portal ropes pretty quick. The rest can wait. Most staffs come together more slowly in college.

Rory spends a lot of time in the trees and his 6 stroke lead evaporates into a tie with Cameron Young at -11.

Scheffler parlays a 65 into going from 12 behind to 4 behind.

There will be drama tomorrow.
