Ole Miss banned the rebel flag a while back and people were not happy. Still the rebels though.

BTW the new mascot for Ole Miss is the Landshark.

People who defend the Confederate Battle flag as not being a racist symbol are intentionally mis-characterizing the whole rasion d'etre for the suscession of the Confederate States. For this still to be an issue in 2020 shows just how these deeply rooted racist beliefs are still held onto so religiously in this country with no let up in sight. WWJD
I loved this, FWIW. I mean, it would have been better if an angry group of season ticket rights holders had taken hammers to the stupid thing, but having Tepper just blatantly make up a vaguely plausible excuse was just about as good.
On the Confederate flag thing ... can we allow that the flag has more than one meaning depending on one's point of view and quit calling each other racists? Thanks.
Personally I have no use for the thing and never have. I'm an actual "born here" Southerner who has never understood the fascination with the symbol of a failed movement, but there are those who want to paint with super broad brushes on both sides of a VERY highly charged issue ... and I find that broad brushes generally do more harm than good. The Civil War is a convenient vehicle for a lot of modern political statements that have next to nothing to do with the actual Civil War. Short hand name calling using KKK, Confederate and Nazi labels is tiresome at best, and usually just an attempt to provoke a response. Let's be better than that.

Speaking of statues, Fulham FC had a statue of Michael Jackson outside their stadium for some unknown reason. The current owner took it down when he bought the team.

Accoding to a former Fulham player, the statue was meant for Harrods but Mohammed Al Fayed, who owned both the store and club, sold the store before the statue could be installed. So he had it installed at Craven Cottage. When Shahid Khan bought Fulham, he had it removed. It was moved to the National Football Museum in Manchester but removed from display in 2019.

Mohammed Al Fayed is also the father of the boyfriend of Princess Diana , Dodi, who died in the car crash with her. He thinks it was a conspiracy to kill her.
And the statue was largely a thing that was derided right from its installation, similar in that way to Jerry Richardson's statue in Charlotte. Why people get bent out of shape about removing things that have publicly mocked and/or loathed since day one is beyond me. You put up a dumb, unpopular monument. Oh ... while we're at it, has anyone taken down that God-awful Christiano Renaldo statue yet? That thing is an insult to the word sculpture and this seems like as good a time as any.

Why not extend it to swastikas then?
If you can’t see a difference between the confederate flag and the swastika and how they are used you’re part of the problem not part of the solution.
Is it a symbol? Do I need to specifically include every symbol ever? Things mean different things to different people. Doesn't mean that they are good things or bad things. It's a neutral statement.
Heck, even the swastika has a different meaning to those of Eurasian ancestry seeing as how the stinking Nazis appropriated somebody else's religious imagery for their own purposes.

I think the big confederate statue at the capitol is only there now since it's so big. If it was small it likely would be torn down by now. Also there are usually a lot of lights there so that might play a role too. Bond Park in Cary has a Columbus marker so I wonder if that one will stay around. It's not well known but it is on a main greenway.
