2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Nice job in raising a smart kid!
I'd like to take credit for that! She did a good job and I managed to stay out of the way!
I had 3 roommates my senior year of college, a civil, a chemical and a mechanical engineering major. We graduated during the 1982 recession so the accounting major got the only job offer in his field. The CE wanted to work for one of the big construction contractors…Turner, Fluor, etc. No one was building big projects so no one was hiring. He went to law school to delay repaying his student loans. He’s a partner in a law firm now, most of his clients are municipal government utility commissions.

The chemical engineer has had mostly mechanical jobs. The mechanical engineer eventually ended up in his field. He was involved in the New Horizons Pluto flyby and his team was visited by Brian May, who collaborated on the project. So he became the 2nd of our group to meet a rock star.
One of my best h/s friends got his ChemE undergrad at State then his JD at Wake. He scoffed at the moaning and groaning of the history and English majors in law school. This dude can do some scorched earth scoffing. One of the smartest guys I've ever known.
And that's Dr. Brian May!

I hope y'all don't mind a bit of bragging on my little girl, but she graduated this weekend from NCSU Engineering w/ a 4.0 GPA. She was one of the 6 civil engineering valedictorians.

I'm soooooooo glad she rolled far away from my academic tree.

Ceremony was in McKimmon and I was on the aisle to see her walk in w/ the grads. I was stumped she was so close to the front of the line, which killed any chance of a picture. After they announced the honors students, I understood. Duh!

Congratulations that’s awesome… Lotta hard work. I was just so proud of my daughter last May so I know how you feel.

Big congrats dude. Darn impressive! Just back from my daughter’s graduation in Alabama. Will be starting nursing school in Charlotte this fall so I’m still shelling it out for 18 months but I swear her time at Bama was the fastest 4 years of her life (and mine). Feeling older by the day. 😢

Thanks. Her time, and all my nieces and nephews just shot on by. Of course, I more than dabbled in time displacement during my 4 years at State!

Shot in the dark here, but are there any NASCAR fans here that are going to the All Star race at North Wilkesboro next weekend? My family is not interested so I’m going alone and wondering if anyone here might be going?

Not going to that one but I noticed that Amtrak is running that special train route from Raleigh and Cary straight to the track just for that race! My son and I took the train to the Charlotte race last Fall and had a blast.

NC State asked the Centennial Authority for permission to divert their share of the naming rights payments, about $500k per year, directly to the men’s basketball program. The fund had been used to pay for improvements requested by the university such as multiple replacements of the basketball floor and locker room upgrades. It also paid for replacing the banners in the arena. Outside the arena, it paid for parking improvements around the indoor practice facility and construction of a food truck pad at the north end of Carter Finley. NC State Athletics Chief of Staff Michelle Lee denied it would be used for player payroll or any NIL deals. Authority chair Kieran Shanahan said he was inclined to approve it and asked Lee to submit a formal proposal. Hurricanes CEO Brian Fork also supported the request.

It’s their money. My only concern is that they could come back, hat in hand, in a few years, looking for capital improvement funds, if they need to renovate the locker room or upgrade the floor. But that’s for another day.

It‘s a DeCock article, so it’s probably behind the paywall.

Meh. It's not that much money in the grand scheme and for the rest of their programs State generally raises money for specific capital projects. If they need funds down the road, then they'll raise them. It's much easier to get donors to support a short term capital project than it is to get them to pump undirected funds into the operating budget.
