2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Sawmill wasn’t a dump when they opened but when they fell, they fell hard and fast. The last 5-7 years of its life, it was bad, bad, bad.
Covid kicked their ass, yet they were able to stay a float— more power to them. It aged hard and got run down.

Lawrence Barbecue was as good as ever, its new location is solid, and the service from the staff was top notch. (Overall, downtown Cary was hopping tonight!) I had a plate with pulled pork and brisket, with barbecue beans and fries as sides. My wife had the same, with Caesar broccoli and mac and cheese as her sides. Also, their brussel sprouts and their oysters are amazing. There are a lot of other options on the menu, including burgers and tacos, that we did not get to. I am still stuffed two hours later, even after going for a walk around the neighborhood when we got home!

You can drive nails w/ Sam Jones cornbread sticks. Da fuq up with that stuff???
Sam claims the he uses his old man's recipe, but I could swear that Skylight's cornbread is a different brand of awful. But make no mistake, the original and Sam's two offshoots all have just terrible cornbread. Again, good pig (down east at least. The Raleigh location is wildly inconsistent) but bland to bad sides.

I've tried the Sam Jones in Raleigh a few times and both times the cue kinda sucked. Nothing like Skylight Inn.
It's the pit. Each pit is different and it can take forever to dial it in. Sam's place down in Winterville lagged behind the original for years and now it's arguably better. The pigs all come from the same place across the three restaurants, so it's not that. Plus nobody coats the lens in nostalgia for some joint on Lenoir St that's only been open a few years.

Longleaf Swine will be moving into the former Sawmill Taproom space at the intersection of Sawmill and Lead Mine Roads.
FYI...Adam Cunningham was quoted in the Triangle Business Journal today that they don't anticipate opening this until fall 2026.

The que and sides at Sam Jones were OK, not the best I've had by any stretch. But that hockey puck they called cornbread was vastly disappointing. So many reviews, center around that dog chew they call cornbread. It's terrible. I've yet to meet anyone who likes it. I'll take Old Times hush puppies 7 days a week. Sam Jones location and parking will help keep me away, so his huge fans can have more.

Once and for all, the idea of “amateurism” in college sports is probably dead.

Thierry Darlen has been granted 2 years eligibility to play D1 basketball at Santa Clara. He played 2 years in the G League and as such had signed a contract and been a member of a union. With that as the background, what is to prevent any former player from trying to enter college. What happens if a basketball player plays in Europe for a year after high school, gets drafted by a NBA team, signed but sits on the bench? After the expiration of his rookie contract what stops him from playing in college? We’ve already seen 2 former minor league hockey players jump back to college.

I mean, they're no longer counting junior college seasons against eligibility for football, so ... are there even rules anymore?

Perfect example of why my interest in college sports has plummeted. The only college sport I really watch anymore is ECAC hockey, since the six Ivy League teams in the league don't offer athletic scholarships.

Basically now you get 4 years of eligibility no matter what.

At some point some 20 something who left school early for the NFL and ended up bouncing around practice squads will end up going back to school and play again.

Andrew Luck has one more year of eligibility. He is the GM for Stanford, he should go back and play that final year at QB for them.

So someone who left school early thinking they were going to make it in a pro league found out that they’re not good enough and now wants to go back to college, play a little more, and probably be more interested in learning something useful in school because they know they can’t make it in pro sports? Is that so awful? Not everyone one will fit that mold of course, but if some do, let em play. They’ve already washed out of a pro league so they’re not exactly ringers.
