Watching Sweden vs Denmark in Euros. Two very good teams but my first thought, after ten minutes is, "I don't think either team could compete with Spain." That 5-0 demolition of Portugal yesterday could have been 10.

Aston Villa and Chelsea have agreed to fines issued by UEFA for breaching Financial Fair Paly rules. Villa were fined €26 million and Chelsea were fined €31 million, which could rise to €91 million if certain conditions aren’t met over the next 4 years.

Cripes ... and it's not like Villa haven't actually tried to be compliant. But if you're actually trying to compete and don't have the luxury of multiple years' worth of Champions League checks in the drawer I no longer see how you can sustainably get better and still comply with FFP.

I don't think that Villa number is correct. I'm seeing numbers around 10 million with a possibility of another 13 if they aren't compliant in a three year window.

I do agree completely with Jeff though that it's a broken system that's only real goal is to keep the rich teams rich and everyone else down. Capitalism baby!!!!

If I processed the info correctly, the paper sale of the women's team will pretty much ensure the eventual penalty is on the lower end of the scale, which is probably why it's being reported at 9 or 10 million ... with the presumption that they will be compliant from here.

Leeds United submitted a planning application to expand Elland Road from about 37,000 to 53,000. There are a few articles about the redevelopment at The Athletic, the one thing that supporters are unhappy about is the prominent Red Bull logo all over the new spaces. Red Bull joined 49ers Enterprises as a minority partner last year and are the front of shirt sponsors on Leeds kits.

Carlo Ancelotti was convicted by a Madrid court for failing to pay taxes on 2014 image rights revenue. He was acquitted of a similar charge for 2015. He was sentenced to 1 year in prison and fined €386,361. He left Real Madrid at the end of this past season and is now the head coach of Brazil's national team.

While he was sentenced to prison, Spain rarely enforces sentences of less than 2 years for non-violent first offenders.

Lyon win their appeal over relegation to Ligue 2 and will remain in Ligue 1 for this coming season. UEFA was waiting for the resolution of the appeal to determine if Crystal Palace would be allowed to play with Lyon in the Europa League. It would surprise me if they were blocked, one of the reasons Lyon won their appeal was Eagle Football’s sale of Palace, which would improve Lyon’s finances.

After Lyon won their appeal to remain in Ligue 1, UEFA removed Crystal Palace from the Europa League and sent them to the Conference League. Palace will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Last summer UEFA cleared Man City and Girona and Man U and Nice to appear in the same competitions when the paired clubs restructured off-field activities. Had Eagle Football sold their stake in Palace earlier, they likely would have been allowed to remain.

Andy Carroll is back in England. He signed with 6th tier Dagenham & Redbridge and is also a minority owner. The club was just purchased by a consortium of Qatari private investors. He played the last 2 seasons in France, first for Ligue 2 Amiens, then for 4th tier Bordeaux.

I've got a work friend who lives quite close to Dag and Red's stadium. His family have supported the club since they were founded in the 90s and are HIGHLY amused that they've somehow hit the radar of the Gulf oil money crowd. He said his Dad thinks it must be a consortium of the broke black sheep sons of wealthy families because it's not like there's any prestige to be found at the club. Their high water mark was a short stint in League One highlighted by a match fixing scandal and their supporters are pretty much 100% neighborhood people who can't be bothered to catch the tube to see West Ham now that they moved to the Olympic stadium
