None. There are none no-risk goalie moves. There never really have been, but in the modern era the mercurial nature of goaltending has gotten even worse. There really aren’t to many no risk goalie moves out there.

Honestly, the best I can say is that I think they've taken a step back but it's a step back that might actually pay off in the post season. Too much depends on the goalies to say anything more definitive.I've put off making too many comments about the state of the Canes going into this season, but I'm having a hard time getting anywhere close to being excited about this team right now. I think we've taken a step backward - but hope I'm wrong.
Dom Luspellcheck and Sean GentilLe have their off-season power rankings out on The Athletic. They have the Pens, Canes, Caps and Rangers cluster together from 10-13. The Islanders are their top team in the Metro at 5.Honestly, the best I can say is that I think they've taken a step back but it's a step back that might actually pay off in the post season. Yeah ... this is the time of the year when I find Dom's models to be the least helpful. So much Is built on last season's results and when a team has a lot of turnover that tends to turn into background noise. I do think the Isles are 100% the legit favorite in the Metro. After that, it's a crapshoot alright ... but I don't think the whole rest of the division will actually be slumming it to the degree those two seem to think. Also, I don't think the Rangers have actually gotten any better at all, unless somebody is comfortable projecting plus GAR/WAR seasons from both Kakko and Lafreniere ... and I haven't seen a single person suggest that's likely. Gallant is a better coach, but the only impact player they've really added is Goodrow and he's a freaking checking line player. As always ... we'll see.Dom Luspellcheck and Sean GentilLe have their off-season power rankings out on The Athletic. They have the Pens, Canes, Caps and Rangers cluster together from 10-13. That’s assuming we make no more moves. This season is going to be one of those marker points for the Dundon/Waddell/Tulsky crew. If we roll into the playoffs again it will silence doubters. If we flame out, they the "cheap" crew will just kill us all season.
And then there will be the ongoing sagas of all the players no longer here. Lots of bodies to watch.
Fair ... and I really don't think they're done quite yet. The next shoe might drop after the season starts though ... and you know how patient the cheap squad is.That’s assuming we make no more moves.
I hope they scouted well. Because I agree. On paper this team looks like last place in the metro.I've put off making too many comments about the state of the Canes going into this season, but I'm having a hard time getting anywhere close to being excited about this team right now. There is no way this team as currently constructed is worse than the Rangers, Columbus or the Devils and they’re probably better than the Flyers too.I hope they scouted well. Because I agree. On paper this team looks like last place in the metro.
Seriously? Last? C'mon now ... that's straight up doing a cannonball into the deep end of the doom and gloom pool.I hope they scouted well. Because I agree. On paper this team looks like last place in the metro.
Another departure from the Canes. This is Michael Smith’s last week with the organization.
Scott Burnside had that role with Dallas for a while but I think that was just between getting let go at ESPN and The Athletic starting up.I like Michael, but that role is pretty much intended to be an entry point kind of deal. There are people freaking out about this online, but I don't understand what they're on about. I'd bet that he's been in that web development/content role WAY longer than 90% of the people in that role for most of the rest of the league's teams.
As I see it, the Islanders will make the playoffs, and Columbus and NJ are highly likely to sit it out. That leaves the Canes, NYR, Pitt, Wash and Philly fighting for three spots. Philly is probably the weakest link and has seemingly found was to underperform lately. I'm more bullish on the Rangers than most, but still, odds are its 4 teams (Canes, NYR, Pitt & Wash) fighting for 3 spots.Seriously? Last? C'mon now ... that's straight up doing a cannonball into the deep end of the doom and gloom pool.
Don't get me wrong. I could 100% see the Canes missing the playoffs, especially if more than one of the new parts doesn't fit and the goaltending ends up being a problem ... but last? DFL?
