2023-24 Premier League Thread

Who else was in on Havertz? I was most surprised by the price they paid. Be one thing if Arteta thought he could get a tune out of him, and they took a chance on him at a bit of a discount….but they nearly returned Chelsea their full investment.

Who else was offering up that kind of money for him?

Eurosport said that Bayern Munich were also chasing him. But would they have gone to £65 million? Probably not.

Well, he does everything at a high level except pass ... and having a bigger body in that slot means a lot to this group. No telling if he hangs onto his much playing time once Ramsay gets fully fit, but I get why he's out there in the meantime. He's a load.

The only thing he does at a high level that I can see is take every possible opportunity to shoot. He's carelessly aggressive trying to take on defenders no matter where he is on the field and he's not good at it. Ramsey is just so much more efficient of a player and much more active and better defensively. He's making me miss Bailey's decision making.

From what I can tell, he's playing BECAUSE he drives at people and shoots. In fact, there has been frustration at Bailey's relative passivity, because he was brought in to drive at people and shoot ... which he seems to understand when he plays for his country, but not for his club. It's going to lead to some lost possessions, but somebody has to freaking go get some for this system to really stress defenses other than in transition.

Bayern rarely pay sticker price for anybody. Heck, they'll wait til a target is well past his prime to avoid paying retail

…and man, @jeffbear you could not have been more right about Ange.

the atmosphere he’s created at the club, on and off the pitch has been incredible. One thing to be getting some results early on, but to see the transformation amongst the players in terms of their support for one another, the brotherly camaraderie that’s developed, it’s been a game changer.

such a subtle thing but him completely changing the leadership group from last year and handing the captaincy to Sonny, giving Maddison vice captaincy a few weeks after joining, and Romero on the back end was a quietly brilliant move.

also I don’t know if it’s something he targets in players, but of the guys he targeted to bring in…Van De Ven, Vicario, Maddison (his #1 priority target, but Tottenham did have interest for years), Brennen Johnson, they’ve all had such great attitudes….

Lloris used to blast players anytime he had to make a difficult save, for not having played perfectly…..meanwhile Udogie makes a huge blunder sending Arsenal in all alone, Vicario makes a big save….and immediately gives Udogie a clap & thumbs up, telling him he’s got him.

then there’s quotes like these…
“I love my club. I love my team-mates. I love our fans. I love the stadium. I just love Spurs. Thank God for all this love.” - Yves Bissouma

- James Maddison.

For me as a centre-back, it is OK to imagine I lose the ball one time and a big chance comes from it and the trainer is screaming from the sides: ‘Again, again, again.’ It gives us some trust to build up again and again. Of course it is risky but when you come out in a nice situation you are always like: ‘Oh yeah.’” - Micky Van De Ven

The confidence he instills in the young guys, by hammering it home that it’s on his shoulders if things go sideways, cause he wants them out there being creative, taking risks, if a mistake happens forget about it and try again….and I think it’s why you see so many young guys, Udogie, Sarr, Van De Ven, and Porro all hit the ground running in his system.

every spurs fan alive assumed because of his high octane system, we’d have to play Royal at RB because Porro struggled so much defensively even with just wingback responsibilities…..but in one preseason Postecoglou’s changed him into a vastly more rounded player who has been integral to the success we’ve had…..and again, it’s born out of (a) Ange’s fearlessness playing the most offensive players and (b) instilling in Porro to lean into his creativeness, trust his support to help him cover, and it’s resulted in him being brilliant at both ends of the pitch. (Completely salvaging what many of us thought would be a wasted £40m purchase, because of the change to 4 atb).

Obviously we’ve plenty of bumps in the road to come, but given how good Ange seemingly is at eyeing players that are more than they’re perceived as, if in his system….it’s going to be a damn fun few years with him at the helm.

One thing we really need to address tho is depth….the second we lose Maddison we’ve be fucked. (Unless Ange thinks Brennen could step in?)…..So need to address that in January.

also need CB depth, and a proper 1v1 dribbling forward who can cross…..losing Perisic’s crossing ability is a big loss (that hurts Richarlisons value, as an elite header)….but we also still don’t have any great dribblers 1v1 on the wing.

Hoping Brennen can get back healthy here quickly, cause I found his short stint pretty encouraging, but also Ange having the belief in him to plug him in right away in a NLD, speaks volumes to what Ange sees in him, (which not unlike Van De Ven, Vicario, Porro, etc) seems to be more than fans/pundits believe him to be.

Honestly, while he's a solid enough technical manager, the absolute best thing about Ange is that he's just such a big hearted, authentic guy. In an age where managers have grown increasingly jaded, detached and mercenary Postecoglu is the polar opposite.

yeah his responses in presser’s about mental health, players stress levels, their responsibilities outside of football, etc has all been top notch. He also immediately did away with the rule that players had to stay at the team hotel the night before home games, so they could get that little extra bit of family time etc…

It’s almost embarrassing how good his answers are in pressers, because its not necessarily anything philosophically brilliant or outside the box…it’s often just human, and what should be common sense…but as you say compared to jaded detached way most managers approach things (and the popularity of kinda weirdo tacticians in the same vein as Bill Belichick who just live and breath football and have little life outside of it)….his responses feel so far outside the norm, haha.

Hell even something as basic as head injuries, Romero is kinda dazed early on in Ange’s first game in the Prem, and without a discussion or anything he pulls him from the game 17 minutes in to be extra safe, prioritizing Romero’s health, over that one game.

meanwhile Conte & Mourinho both implied guys were pussies a few times, if they missed any amount of time with injuries…always pushing them to come back early.

it’s really night and day.

…and then also when it comes to play style, he’s more than happy to be the point man for blame etc, and has primed the media & fans pretty well that there’s going to be errors and bad mistakes, plenty of goals allowed as a result of the style we play, but that’s on him and the system and wanting the players to learn on the pitch…effectively shielding them beforehand from any real backlash when mistakes happen.

It’s insane that he’s made the loss of Harry Kane, largely irrelevant to 95% of Tottenham fans, because we’re so thrilled with this current squad, style of play, and the gaffer leading us.

The ultimate test is would I want that guy coaching my team.

You’re damn right I would. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not pitching Arteta overboard. But as much as it pains me to say it, Levy picked a winner.

Fair ... so long as you're a rational, reasonable human (which I know you are). But we all know that the fan bases of the vast majority of English sides are made up largely of nothing of the sort. Same with Celtic. And Big Ange managed to win over two REALLY jaded, skeptical bases with what looks like ease ... with almost nothing in his bag to commend himself other than shear force of personality. He's an impressive guy.

@jeffbear was there any signings with Celtic under Ange that somewhat mirror his Brennen Johnson signing? That’s the one move that despite Brennen having amazing physical traits, spurs fans seem pretty meh on him overall due to his lacklustre underlying stats.

We’re all happy to defer to Ange obviously, but it’s got less confidence behind it than the VDV, Maddison or Vicario signings….but again, Ange put him directly in, for a Derby no less, so he’s obviously pretty bullish on him.

I dunno ... it took awhile for a couple of his first season J League signings to really get going and Celtic fans are as ridiculous about "foreign" players as any UK fan base. Plus, some of those guys pushed out fan favorites so there was a lot of early grumbling. You've got to keep in mind that the recruitment program at Celtic is much more manager driven than at Spurs where they have a massive personnel office. So, it's apples to oranges really.

Hi guys. Long time no talk to. Sorry, I got busy at the end of the year with a number of things and ended up staying away. I forgot how much I enjoyed this place. But I'm back, and so is the friendly banter. ;)
Big matches this week-end with the biggest being my Reds and Montana's Spurs (hey man, nice to "meet" you). Lots of Reds fans are predicting another 3-1 win (cheekily, I'll admit since it's been our scoreline our last four matches) but I'm not so sure. As Montana describe, Ange has transformed the culture at the club in a remarkably short period of time. Massive respect for the work he's done. And the quality all over the pitch? Son, Maddison, Kulusevski, Perisic, Porro, Romero and the kid van de Ven. I expect a great battle and would be happy to walk away with a point (though of course I'd much prefer all three). Need to come "out of the gates" much faster and much more on top than our recent fixtures. I'll be interested to see our midfield partnering (Jones again? Endo for a change?) and hoping the forwards continue their good form recently.
I'll be at my spot in "Old Town" Pasadena with a number of my fellow Reds, cheering and singing my heart out. Enjoy your football viewing!

Yeah I think it’s going to be a hell of a game, really looking forward to it.

I do tend to side with Reds fans in general that a Liverpool win feels somewhat likely, just a gut feeling I have that we’re due a bit of a reality check that while we may be ahead of schedule, we are still a ways off being a finished product. Liverpool are also the only remaining team that has visited our grounds, and never left with a defeat….so I’m feeling like a win by two goals is in the cards.

also I think in many of our games we’ve worn the opponent down and taken control late, and I just don’t see that happening in this one.

The transformation he’s done on Porro is something else….if there was one thing I was “certain” of coming into the year, it was that our recent £40m investment at wingback was gonna go up in smoke, as now he’s liable to be stapled to the bench…..but I’ll he damned if Ange hasn’t made him worth every last penny we spent on him.

I’m excited to see how Udogie and Van De Ven match up with Salah, that’s going to be a great measuring stick test for them both.

Yeah I’m with you here, I think for you to win you’ll need to put your stamp on the game early and be up one or two by half…

if we make it to half tied, I’ll be happy.

Bissouma is right there with Maddison as my player of the year so far….if we survive your press, it’s liable to be thanks for Yves. Him, Mads, and Van de Ven are three of my favourites to key on every week…

I'll be at my spot in "Old Town" Pasadena with a number of my fellow Reds, cheering and singing my heart out. Enjoy your football viewing!

👌🏼

no matter the outcome I’m very confident it’s going to be a hell entertaining match….here’s to both squads coming out of it healthy. 🍻
