2023-24 Premier League Thread

Brennen Johnson also had a nice appearance on the weekend, instantly hooking up with Mads & Son for that beauty of a goal……so curious to see if he cracks the starting XI here shortly over Richarlison.

Yeah, Bentancur is a huge emotional boost, too, after what he went through. And one more quality player in the squad is always nice to have. ;)
I was a big fan of Brennan's when he was with Forest. Nice to see him get that run out, and he looked like he belonged. Onward and upward for him, I'm sure you hope.
 
Newcastle-Arsenal feels pretty huge today….if a decisive winner is crowned I feel like it tells us quite about about this season and where both stand.

If Arsenal can’t win this, the legitimacy of a title push becomes a bit more questionable, and a Newcastle loss leaves them in that Man United zone scrambling a bit to make up ground to be a top 4 team.

Obviously a single game can only move the needle so much, but I do think it’s as key a 3 points as there is that isn’t an Arsenal-City game, basically.

VAR bollocksed it up. Guimaraes should have seen straight red In the first half. Then they compounded it by missing all 3 opportunities they had to chalk off the Newcastle goal.
 
That was an embarrassing performance by all involved in the refereeing and VARing of the Newcastle v Arsenal rugby match. Guimaraes with the reddest of reds and at least three more things that should have been at least yellows if not another red. Every single official involved with this match should be fired. Disgraceful. Also, never a fucking goal. I don't know what the hell I just watched. It wasn't soccer. It was entertaining though.
 
I don't know for sure if the ball went out of play. I do know for sure that two fouls occurred (push in the back and a hand ball) and I'm also pretty damn sure that Gordon was offsides. Also, I'm 100% sure that Guimaraes should have seen red multiple times and that the ref had zero control over the match.

Also, I'm looking at that picture and that's a ball that's over the actual line with a line drawn a few inches past the touch line through the ball. Is that a joke or something? That's really piss poor.

What are the darker lines supposed to represent? If it’s the touch line, the corner flag is placed incorrectly. There is green between the hall and the actual, white touch line. Out of bounds.
 
Honestly, after how many ever years they've had VAR in England I'm no longer sure what I'm seeing anymore. It's like one very long, very large experiment in gaslighting. 'Oh, you think you know what a line is, eh? We'll see about that, sonny."
 
Montana, let's just say you aren't exactly unbiased in this situation. There is a huge difference between the many things that happened in this match and the extreme fuck up in the Liverpool match. Ten seconds after it happened, everyone involved in the Liverpool match knew they fucked up. It's not good that it happened, but we can understand why it happened especially considering they're under a directive to be as quick as possible and once play was restarted and they all realized that there was a communication error, there's no mechanism in place for them to fix it which we can all agree is pretty damn silly.

A person looked at Bruno Guimaraes deliver a forearm shiver to the back of someone's head and went, well that's fine, no issues here. Or a full speed shoulder check to someone's back a good three seconds late and said that's just part of the game as is kicking the ball directly at a player full force after the play is dead. Those things to me are even worse than the goal. That wasn't a goal, but I can see the incorrect rational that could make someone decide they can't overturn it (except the fact that there's a clear handball which hasn't been mentioned much) and I might even give a little benefit of the doubt if it weren't for the fact that Guimaraes was still on the field. I cannot think of a top to bottom all people involved worse refereeing performance of the VAR era. We still have linesmen who can see things and point them out to the ref and then video as well and all of them shit the bed so hard.

FWIW that ref should NOT be working PL games going forward. Period. That's just utter incompetence. Actually nobody on that crew should be working at that level.

I don’t know who the VAR was for that match but the center ref was Stuart Atwell, who was VAR for Forest v. Villa on Sunday.
 
Premier League clubs will vote on November 21 on whether to ban loan moves between related parties. Mentioned specifically is a possible move for Ruben Neves from Al Hilal to Newcastle in the January window as a replacement for suspended Sandro Tonali. Bot Al Hilal and Newcastle are owned by the Saudi PIF. It would also prevent Man City from using their clubs in Australia, Spain, the US and elsewhere from making a similar move.
 
Insane it wasn’t always a rule really, once the shady money got involved with the sport to the extent it did.

They also shouldn’t be allow to sell to their own clubs at inflated prices, as we’ve seen a couple times. Honestly questionable any sales should be allowed at all of that nature.
 
Wasn't as much of an issue before FFP and state owned teams. Before FFP, there wouldn't have been a need to sign a player somewhere else and then loan them on the cheap to skirt FFP. The concept of feeder clubs has always existed, we are just verging on the late stage capitalism dystopia version of it.
 
Havertz should have gone but not Bruno... Was the panel made up of Alan Shearer, Kevin Keagan and the Ameobi's? You aren't helping your credibility by having the only people on earth who don't think Bruno should have been sent off on your panel and running VAR. Havertz was an orange card situation for sure and I think if the ref had given red, VAR would have upheld it. He got super lucky that he didn't actually make much contact, because it was super reckless and dangerous, but he didn't make any contact while he was flying through the air and instead made contact on the ground with just the trailing leg. If he had gotten sent off I might have thought it was a little harsh since the actual foul was not bad, but his actions were super dangerous so I would have understood. I don't understand the type of person who can look at what Bruno did and not just immediately go, well that's clearly a red card, not sure why we're even talking about this?
