2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Miller suffers from two things ... the mystery of how he will produce counting stats in Carolina's system and how Dom's model under-rates guys with his profile. Look at any defenseman who doesn't generate power play production on that ranking to see the effect.

And on Ehlers ... sure. I'm not bothered by it. Carolina's paying him based on his point per minute production and betting he'll produce more with more usage and better injury luck. That's a safe enough bet and the kind of thing almost every team has on their contract list at some level.

Hard to tell though, especially with Ehlers. If he can stay healthy and put up 70 points a season his value will look a whole lot better.

The NY Rangers were an absolute train wreck defensively last season. What will K'Andre Miller look like in our system paired with either Chatfield or Slavin and playing with forwards who actually play defense?

It might take a few seasons before anyone really knows how those contracts are going to play out value wise with those players playing for the Canes.
Cernak and Vasilevskiy are both still negative value but their improved play made them less negative and helped the Bolts move up. So 1year of improved play from Ehlers and Miller should be enough to increase the value.

Incidentally, Dom’s model has TDA at $3.1 million value over contract.
Yup. That's what I'm talking about when it comes to holes in Dom's model. He's got DeAngelo as a surplus player and Nate Schmidt as a negative contract value ... just to pull two guys to make a point. Every single team in the league would rather have Schmidt on their third pairing but DeAngelo produces more points and the model can't figure out how to reward general defensive competence or punish defensive incompetence. Problem being, other than shot suppression and zone entry percentage, even the fanciest of stats don't really pick up that stuff. And big commercial models by their nature can't rely on the eye test.

Remember how I'm always preaching about avoiding input from random idiots on the internet and/or on podcasts? Yeah. Sadly Wis has proven himself to be another random idiot. And hey, I like Roslovic. He's a decent secondary scoring option so long as you're not relying on him to be consistent.

Former NHL players are reliable sources of stupid comments to an alarming degree.
