2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

Problem being, I think Adams is going to have to retain to move him since he's wildly over-paid and obviously headed to market at the end of the deal. The only way to get value out of this player is going to be sucking it up and letting the player dictate the trade market. If he goes to a team that he'll consider negotiating a longer term deal with, then Adams can maybe get something for him. Otherwise, why would anyone bother? Especially since he ain't going to get more PP opportunities, even on a crappy team, so his numbers are still going to be pedestrian at best.

Byrum would be PP1 for a few teams, some of them contenders. Chicago could use Byrum as their PP1 Dman. Minnesota could use a better option on PP1.

I don't know what Buffalo is going to look for in a trade, but they might find the market more willing to pay up after the season starts and someone suddenly has a need for #3-5 Dman with offensive upside.

I'm sure somebody could use Byrum, but at $6.25 AAV it's going to be a limited group, and not likely to include many playoff teams. Like CM said, the Wild have the cash and a need for that kind of D-man, as do the Flames. The Jets could use Byrum in their mix, but the return wouldn't be great because it would be a high cost short term deal for them. Otherwise it's the rebuilding crew. Adams kicked the can down the road on this one, but in doing so he really limited his good outcomes.

I’m honestly shocked that they only brought Kekalainen in as an advisor and didn’t fire Adams already.
Same. And having done that, I'm guessing the Pegulas give Jarmo a whole season to map out his plans before kicking Adams to the curb. Or, even more on brand, kicking him upstairs. I'd wager the Sabres don't fire Adams at all but rather install him in some executive position to be named later, mostly because they almost never do whatever it is their fans want ... even when it's logical and reasonable.

So Joe Veleno has had an interesting 12 months.
  • 6/30/24 - Qualified by Detroit
  • 7/5/24 - Veleno files for arbitration
  • 7/19/24 - Veleno signs, 2 years, $2.3 million AAV
  • 3/7/25 - traded to Chicago for Petr Marcel and Craig Smith
  • 6/21/25 - traded to Seattle for Andre Burakovsky
  • 6/29/25 - waived for purposes of buyout
  • 7/16/25 - signed by Montreal, 1 year, $900k
Montreal’s GM is Kent Hughes. Who was Veleno’s agent when he broke into the league? Kent Hughes. Veleno was also the first player in the QMJHL to be granted “exceptional” status and only the 5th overall in the CHL. Fair to say it hasn‘t worked out yet.

Maybe Joe Veleno being back in his 'hometown' will help get him to at least a productive 3rd or 4th liner. Even if his offensive skills didn't come with him from the Q, he likes to run into people. I would say Veleno is worth a shot for Montreal at that price point. They can just bury him in the minors if necessary with no cap implications if it doesn't work out.

I've never been able to figure out what Veleno is supposed to be as an NHLer. He carries himself like he's a big deal, but he's never done much or even looked that impressive skill-wise. I figure a 1 year lowball contract that he probably only got because his old agent is running a team might be sufficient to slap a little arrogance out of him.

Yeah, this idea that there's some sort of annual logjam that's holding up all these wonderful trades and signings is basically a myth. I'm sure there once was a single player who eventually got signed or traded which then triggered a bunch of other moves. I'm also sure it was so long ago that I don't remember the circumstances.

Like the trade deadline, the hockey media get bored, want things to report and start making crap up when it doesn't happen

Amazed how close to the Cap the Flyers are, considering the (lack of) quality of the roster.
PuckPedia shows 3 goalies and they have $6.7 million of dead money with Atkinson’s buyout and retained salary for Hayes and Laughton. But Michkov is the only player on their roster on his entry deal.

I read that Adams seems to be the mouthpiece for Pegula in that he's doing what they want; that's probably why he's still there.

Roslovic apparently is being courted by the Leafs with a carrot of “maybe” he gets to play on Matthews wing on a top line…even though some tout him as a center I think he’s a safer play on the wing.

Between the dream come true of playing for the leaves and the chance to play on a line with such a legendary hockey god they’re probably trying to work out the negative salary cap ramifications since surely Roslovic is paying the leaves to be able to play there.

From what I've seen, Roslovic thought he'd get some offers to choose from early, coming off a 20+ goal season, but getting benched in the playoffs didn't help his case much. I like the guy, but he's a utility forward and that's about it.

Ducks and goalie Lukas Dostal avoid arbitration and agree on a 5 year/$6.5 million AAV contract.
