2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

CA avocados are pretty great, but I have no frame of reference for what a Mexican avocado tastes like. I've been to Mexico and never really focused on whether the avocado was noticeably better, may not have even had any outside of guac, but I can't remember anything about what I ate from when I was there.

Cali grows a lot of their own, from the same species in semi similar climates. It's probably pretty damn close. You're getting them tree ripened in Cali, which is probably the main difference. We get them as hard green rocks that we take home from the grocery store, put in a paper bag for a few days before they're ripe enough to eat. But they go from "ripe enough" to overripe really quickly here. I have probably 1 of 10 that starts to develop brown spots on parts of the flesh before the rest is ripe.

Central mexico's climate is specifically awesome for haas avocado though.

Yeah. It’s a euphoric feeling when I go 3 for 10 in terms of perfectly ripening my avocados in Canada

It’d be fucking boring if they were all great, tbh.

Small haas from California are going 2 for a buck right now here in BLC and have been for a couple of months; good price for another coupla months or so, plus/minus a few cents from time to time to keep it interesting. 😉

Used to be 3/$5 here. Now they’re $2.50 each

Would this be a good time to mention how destructive the avocado industry is to the environment of both California and Mexico? Tons of water is diverted away in order to service these cash crops, making other areas drought-striken.

Yeah, they're not cheap, sometimes. US0.50 each is a "good" price here, but over in SF there are some mercados that'll sell 'em to you for US0.25 each. Prob'ly some here, too - just haven't dug hard enough to find 'em. Also some places that'll gladly let you pay US1.50 for 1.

I should say, the tree does all the work and the landscaper takes care of the trees.

I don’t do fuck all but pick one when wanted.

Just off of the grocery store chain I've shopped at the most when I haven't been able to do mercado runs, the current price of bulk avocado is 48 pesos for a small bag (same little mesh bags we buy here), so that's about 3.20 cad. Premium avocado is 68 pesos per kg, so about 4 decent sized avocados in a kg, at about 4.50 cad. Cheaper than here given the transportation difference but not an epic difference. Quality though, night and day imo.

That's supermarket prices. Mercado prices are cheaper (with imo better quality), especially if you're buying a few KG at a time, and a few other things along with it. I used to go to Mercado Abastos in guadalajara weekly with either the wife or the MiL and ended up gravitating towards the same 2-3 stalls over time. Same vendadora sees your face a few times, the deals get better.
