2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

I really think that the "passengers" comment was directed at Willy. I think that both Matthews and marner don't like him, especially after the Amazon show and the stop crying.
When marner yelled "wake the fuck up" I bet it was to Willy.

Matthews and marner have learned way too much from Thornton and Marleau. Willy doesn't like that shit.

I hope that with marner gone Willy and Mathews can bury the hatchet and get to work.

I still think that that passengers comment was stupid for the captain to say. Willy knows those two are soft together.
Willy is the only charter member of the Core 4 who I would take on my team. The other 3 I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot barge pole. They are all cancers to one degree or another. Willy is the only one who plays post-season games like he gives a shit about winning. It must frustrate the hell out of him to be stuck with those two whiny man-babies and the former captain who stares blankly into space like he's still concussed from 2021. No wonder 88 checked out later in the series.

I don't recall seeing Nylander in that photo from this morning at the country club. Any player NOT in that photo is a player with whom I'd be interested.

They are saying Marchand + Ehlers is only 300k more than marner?

how does Ehlers works as a poorish man's Marner replacement? does he have the same record of postseason choking?

Due to position, I would prefer less points at the C with bennet for say 7, than Ehlers for 8.
as well as size and winning pedigree.

I want no part of a Bennett UFA deal. Seems like a guy who's gonna get paid a ton for 'intangibles'

I'm getting pretty sick of losing to guys with intangibles though.

I mean, what's the difference between Alex Kerfoot and Max Domi? Intangibles. Also, with that said. The beating Bennett was laying on Tanev while forechecking looked pretty fucking tangible to me. 6.6 is a little heavy for my liking, but if we're going to win we need guys who show up when it's time to bleed a little bit. I do think that's a learned skill to a degree, but it is a skill.

Bennett will be a classic case of a good supporting player on a cup champ who gets paid like he'll be a legit star on his new team and inevitably disappoints.

And he’d be an extra bad deal for the Leafs, since the one elite ability he brings to the table—injuring and cheap-shorting opponents in the playoffs and getting away with it—will sure as hell not transfer over to Toronto. The shit he did to Knies and Stolarz would get him suspended in Toronto faster than you can say “Nazem Kadri”.

Poop UFA class.

Obviously you have to sign one of Tavares, Duchene, Nelson or Bennett, otherwise your Cs are Matthews-Domi-Laughton-Kampf.

Then you have to decide if you want to spend big money on Marner, Ekblad or Ehlers, or if there are trades out there for little return (because you have nothing to trade).

Given the cap is going up a ton, and there are no free agents I'm not sure how many good value contracts there will be either.

the FA market is pretty shite. I'd be interested to see what kind of talent we can acquire just using our cap space - there are always good players on shitty deals that get dumped in the offseason. don't think we solve our problems with FAs

I think the way forward is to sign Tavares and Bennett, then go hit the trade market to see who is looking to get out from under a contract that is worse to them than it is to us. I'm not a JT fan, this is known....but if we can have JT and Bennett for more or less the same money we paid JT this past year, that's a pretty significant upgrade to cap efficiency YoY. Move Domi to Matthews wing where Auston's positional dominance erases all of or most of Domi's defensive issues and with a bit of shuffling around with the rest of the forwards (find a home for Kampf and Jarnkrok) and I think we're a better 9 man unit there.

last year’s post mortem thread was focused on the core 4

This year, it’s on Max the journeyman

I mean, most of us have pretty much accepted that Mitch is gone and Tavares only comes back on a very steep discount. What is there to talk about?

Tavares is coming back for sure, it's just a question of whether it's $5m or even less. Glad your secret love for him is finally coming out.

Bennett is fine by me if we're moving on from Marner, but am probably never going to be comfortable with moving on from Marner. The Leafs feel like waiting for a parking space to open up in a busy mall. The best strategy isn't to keep driving around and hoping that you fluke into a car leaving, but rather to pick a decent spot and stay there until a car in front of you leaves. Marner is that decent spot, but yeah, we could drive around and get lucky and find another spot on the other side of the aisle.

I wouldn't mind upgrading D to be honest. I don't know how much Ekblad will demand, and he's injured a lot, but he's tough to play against. I wonder if Carlo could recoup a 1st rounder from another team, and then we sign Ekblad to replace him.

I want them to find guys like Bennett, Luosterainen, Rodrigues, Verhage, Montour, OEL, Schmidt, Mikkola on the scrap heap for nothing, and if they trade assets do it for guys like Reinhart and not guys like Laughton.

Imagine they traded Minten and a 1st for Byram or Tuch instead of Carlo.

Yeah, I want all of the cunts.

Bennett's 6.6 sounds a bit high, but the cap is sky rocketing over the next few years (until Trump drives the world economy off of a cliff....)

25/26: 95.5
26/27: 104
27/28: 113.5

So Bennett making 6.6 of a 113 million dollar cap in year 3 of a 6 year deal would be the equivalent of paying him about 5.1 under this year's cap levels.

Just fucking do it.
