2025-26 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Why all the talk about trading Boom lately? Who thinks that's a good idea?
I’m not sure there is all that much talk about trading Nikishin, and what little there is probably stems from the rumors that he was included in trade offers for Quinn Hughes. The hockey press loves a trade rumor and once a guy appears in that kind of rumor, they tend to assume that he’s on the market. More likely he WAS on the market … in a potential deal for the 2nd or 3rd best defenseman in the NHL, and not for a second line center or rental forward.

The team is practicing today. Ghost is in a regular jersey, Martinook is absent so Philp is in his spot.

Svechnikov-Aho-Jarvis
Hall-Stankoven-Blake
Ehlers-Staal-Philp*
Carrier-Jankowski-Kotkaniemi

Slavin-Chatfield
Miller-Walker
Gostisbehere-Nikishin
Reilly-Nystrom

Bussi
Andersen

With Ghost back, Nikishin is back on PP2

PP1: Gostisbehere, Aho, Svechnikov, Staal, Jarvis
PP2: Nikishin, Hall, Ehlers, Stankoven, Blake

Edit: post practice, RBA said he’s hopeful Ghost can play tomorrow. Martinook had a maintenance day.

I know there was that kerfuffle with Nikishins agent in some poorly translated Russian article several months ago. That they were demanding a trade. I'd venture to guess that unless he's doing something stupid that the coaching staff doesn't like, he isn't going anywhere. He's playing 5 on 5, PP and even on the PK. As a rookie. That's not half bad. You'd think the ceiling on this kid is still pretty high. I still think he's going to be a top pairing guy. His ceiling appears to be a good bit higher than Miller or Chatfield. If he develops into a solid defender, he's got very nice offensive weapons to boot.

That was the biggest nothingburger of the season so far … right up there with Jack Drury’s “trade demand” in his rookie season.

No changes at practice today before they hop on a flight to DC. They’re not expecting snow up there, but hopefully they can get back to RDU after the game. The Kings are in Philly for a 12:30 start tomorrow, they’ll get to Raleigh before the Canes for Sunday’s game.

No snow in the forecast for Philly either, so it’ll be down to whether or not RDU can stay open long enough to get everybody on the ground. If it’s just snow, then they’ve got a fighting chance.

Supposed to be nasty wind gusts tomorrow into Sunday. That might be the biggest issue.

I am curious what you guys think. For context I added this interesting list with 5 categories that make sense to me. He doesn't add numbers of cap space or give trade examples, but where he thinks this are where teams are and says Carolina needs the cup now.

My questions are more wondering who are the BEST trading partners for the Canes? Different teams will want different things some money, some prospects, some veterans. I'm seeing a real need for the second line big center hopefully physical in his late 20s, and maybe a goalie. Are things being held so tight to the vest to even guessing on a particular person or persons?
Of course reality to me is assets will have to go both ways. Carolina has cash. Do they need to keep some back for deals next year or is the cap going up to where the sky is the limit on the money side for the Canes?

  • To St. Louis: Alexander Nikishin (D), or Bradly Nadeau (F), Dominik Badinka (D), and a 2026 2nd Round Pick.
  • To Carolina: Robert Thomas (C).

Am I supposed to care about apples and oranges? Could be a really high price given up Niki but to be honest I think we really need a 2C now and in the future. Tough rumor

Giving up Nikishin for a forward makes no sense.
