2025-26 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Nikishin got plenty of play in our top 4 when most of the crew was hurt. I would hope that Nikishin wants to play more, you don't want players who are content to get lesser minutes.

Nikishin still put up enough stats that would get him $8 million per on a long term deal even as mostly a 3rd pair guy. Jalen Chatfield has one more season left on his contract and is 30 years old. He will be 31 at the end of the coming season. That is typically the situation where the Canes allow our Dmen to sign elsewhere for more money than we think their value is. So yeah, there will probably be a top 4 spot available after next season. But this coming season? No.

Ghost's is also on the final year of his deal. He will be 34, but his situation as a 3rd pair guy and #1 PP guy is different than Chatfield's, so he MIGHT be given another contract.
Niki can cry me a river about usage. He got what he earned and more. Could he have spent more time on the 2nd PP unit? Probably, but Miller exists and he earned quality time too.

I think this isn't fair. I want him to stay but it has to be around 6 with term. I don't blame him for wanting to cash in. I also don't blame the Canes for getting what they can for him. It wasn't great but also not a liability.

The answer is yes. The evidence is the Olympics … and the Vezinas … and the MVP … and the fact that 33 ain’t all that old for a goalie.
So, is the reason the Jets are looking for more return? Or is Helly holding out for the Panthers?
If holding out, I say we don't want him anyways.

I don't blame him either, but the crying about usage ticks me off. He got his chances and sometimes he showed up … sometimes not so much. If you’re reading that and thinking I see him as a liability then you’re getting me wrong. He’s not. But he’s a third pairing, sheltered usage guy in Carolina’s system. And he probably will be next year too unless he’s willing to work on some stuff.

The Panthers have to move at least 1 NHL body. Hellebuyck is at $8.5 million, the Panthers have less than $6 million available and only have 6 dmen and no goalies signed. He has a 10 team approved trade list, so he also has some control over where he goes

Also, the Panthers aren’t morons. The two guys that would be on the block are Lundell and Lewie, both of whom are key parts of their system. And if they don’t have any money or assets left over, try replacing either one of them out of thin air. No. Florida needed Hellebuyck to ask for a trade to Florida and Florida only so they could put the screws to the Jets, and apparently he hasn’t done that.

Having a tandem of Bussi and Hellebuyck and the window we’re in would make this Carolina team that much better. Can you ever be too strong in net if your giving up a d-man?

In Tulsky we trust!

The one thing that stands out. Florida seems to find/waiver good goalies. Bussi wasn't the first one.

Their backups have been pretty solid, true … Stolarz, Tarasov, Knight (drafted player), and Lyons (he’s been everywhere) in recent years. Since Bill Zito has been there, Florida’s only misses in net have been Johansson and Vitek Vanacek … but those guys have sucked everywhere they’ve been and were only playing out of necessity

More wildness.

The 192nd pick is what it is … a swing in the dark … and Masters is just a guy we ended up with for some reason. So, not much on the cost side of the ledger. Which is probably good because I have no idea what they’d be getting on the payback part of the ledger. Carlson is both old and expensive and doesn’t move well enough anymore to really have the legs to play even sheltered minutes in Carolina’s system without struggling. That said, he won most of his shifts in Anaheim and was coming off a resurgent season and a half for the Caps. He’s always been a terrific distributor on the power play, it’s the rest of the package that doesn’t fit. He IS a right sider though, which helps.

Still. Maybe they have something else going on that makes this make more sense. Probably do. We’ll see.
