2025-26 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

If you can’t (or won’t) read the article, the Carolina Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association also named Hall as the winner of the Josef Vasicek award for cooperation with the media and Brandon Bussi was named MVP.

The Chapter is chaired by Cory Lavalette and includes Ryan Henkel from The Hockey News and Chip, Justin Pelletier and Luke DeCock from the N&O. I wonder if Luke will be removed, since he’s not at the N&O anymore. He’s not even in the Triangle, he moved back to Chicago. Sara Civian is still listed as a member in the International Chapter.

To be pendantic, it’s Luke DeCock from the 10-15 online basketball outlets he freelances for now. And yeah, I’d assume he’ll be removed from the Carolina Chapter for next season since he’s not going to be specifically covering the Canes going forward and is going to be based out of Chicago. I’m not sure he’s even going to be covering the NHL going forward either. Thus far his post-NandO work is all hoops. Maybe he’ll also shift to the International Chapter and keep his toe in the water.

As for the awards, I have nothing to offer on the Vasicek Award, since that’s basically the home media identifying the guy who is most open and cooperative with them. Whatever they say goes on that one. For MVP, I have a hard time looking past Aho and Jarvis to give it to Bussi, but whatever. He had a remarkable season out of the clear blue sky, so you may as well throw it his way.

Bussi sort of saved the Canes season when Kochetkov was out and Freddie was battling Binnington for the worst goalie in the NHL.

Once we moved on from Cam Ward, only 2 goalies have won 30 games in a season for the Canes:

Freddie in 21-22 had 35 wins in 52 games
Bussi this season has 30 wins in 37 games

None of our top forwards or Dmen have had any sort of 'better than normal' type seasons. The 2nd line has sure been on a tear and all of them are going to end up with pretty nice looking counting stats for a 2nd line, but Aho is right at point a game Aho, Jarvis scored 30 goals, Svech finally got back to where he needs to be. Ehlers has been great.

Really could have given it to Aho and Jarvis or Bussi....but I think Bussi is the right call for what he did up to the Olympic break.

Canes goalies since the return from the Break:

Freddie 7-4-0 2.92 GAA .865 Sv%
Bussi 7-3-0 3.51 GAA .846 Sv%

That isn't giving me a lot of confidence going into the playoffs.

My thinking is that Aho maintained a point per game this season without the benefit of any kind of hot streak like he would generally have. And he carries a pretty heavy defensive load as well, which was slightly increased this season as they lightened up on the Staal line a bit after being forced to draft Staal back into PP usage. Jarvis just had an excellent year all around, carries much of the same burdens as Aho and led in both goals scored and game winning goals. Those two are the most important players for the Canes game in and game out and a lot of the time we over-think this stuff. That said, Bussi’s fine with me for all the reasons CM cites.

The team had an optional skate before flying to Chicago. Deslauriers, KK, Reilly and Robinson were shooting on Andersen, Bussi was at the other end working with the goalie coach. No update on Chatfield.

All 4 of those guys should be in the lineup tomorrow night. They don't even need to travel, just meet the Canes at the rink.

Brind'Amour for Jankowski
Slavin for Carrier
Nadeau foe Jarvis
Legault for Chatfield

I hoping the blackhawks stop by Pizzeria Uno on the way to the rink.

If they've learned anything living in Chicago, they know that Pequod's is the place to go for real deep dish.
Well, no, they would be hitting the Polish restaurant buffets and stopping for an Old Style at each bar with an Old Style sign with "Cold Beer" in different languages.
